M_a_x wrote:I recently got a Rega P1 turntable. Switched the cartridge to a Rega Bias 2 pretty darn quick and got a glass platter, so it's basically a P2. Very happy with it. My amp is a stoopid Pioneer and the next thing to be replaced on my 'get a decent sounding stereo' quest - any suggestions in the 0-500$ price range? I don't know who made my speakers, I think they're homebrewed, but I like 'em.

I'm surprised no one here has a dynaco 70. they were good enough for sunn. I think they go for about $300. considered one of the classic tube amps of the 60s.

Madlee,

I built an ST70 myself about three months ago. Of course I got it from the revitalized dynakitparts.com company, as opposed to the authentically vintage Dynaco ST70s from the 60s. The circuit/design is recreated, but the selenium rectifier is replaced with a diode and the transformers are very close approximated to the orignals.
I have upgraded the capacitance with a SDS coupling cap upgrade, and am soldering together a better front-end PC board that I ordered. This whole project is my first foray into DIY electronics and is very gratifiying.
My speakers are Klipsch Fortes that I am to modifiy/recap soon, and I am building a Hagerman BuglePro as my phonostage and a Hagerman Clarinet as a tube-powered line-stage.
My turntable is a ProJect debut.
Shellac's At Action Park is my reference LP.

MUCH appreciated!

I keep trying to get down to the HiFi shop in town, but they are open for a grand total of 4 hours a week. I keep missing them.

Here's a link if you want to watch the audiokarma thread I started:

It can get kinda creepy and geeky, so don't say I didn't warn you.

Thanks Brinkman. I'm quite used to geeky, creepy, on the other hand....

As to sound, I have been warned not to plug it in unless I have it hooked up to speakers, which I have not done. I can do this though. Should I? (Probably a stupid question.)

Thanks. I hear that from bartenders a lot (my avatar is my state-issued ID photo). The folks at audiokarma seem to think you have a Frankenstein's Monster as opposed to a product manufactured by any known company. That is not all bad, as it might be easy to turn "it" into a "pair" of monoblocks (good thing).

You should repost your photo link on the Tech Forum here as a "What is this contraption?" thread. I'd be very suprised if a bunch of electrical engineers couldn't shed some light.

Yeah, I was following that thread. I tried to reg. but they never sent confirmation, so ....

I was going to ask them how to plug it in because it seems as if there is no, ummm, plug.

Good photo. Makes me want to have a black eye for my next dl photo.

Ta for your help, sir Brinkman!

**Yes, nice forum there Brinkman. I have somehow managed to get banned before even making one post! I don't understand what I did. Just by having gay equipment?**

I have no idea why you'd be banned. If you have questions and cannot ask them on the forum, PM me and I'll figure it out.

Anyhoo, I think you have an abandoned DIY effort where someone wanted to wire together two monoblocks into into a single chassis. The knobs projecting out of the front and the plates on the chassis are probably from a separate unit (or units). The input selector (AM/FM/TAPE/PHONO) seems to be hardwired to the inputs on the back, so you pretty much have a power amplifier wired as a dual single-channel with a selectable input. Near the transformers is typically where one would wire a AC cord, so one of the holes near it would likely been intended for this purpose before the project was scrapped. Here's a single monoblock to look at:
