What was the most expensive record you ever purchased?

I just bought a box set of RCA Living Stereo shaded dog reissues from Classic Records on 180g. I paid $230. Which comes to $23 a record. I don't think that's too bad for some of the best recordings of the CSO ever done.

I paid $42 for a copy of Charlie Barnet's "Redskin Romp" on RCA. It has a great cover by Jim Flora. It will end up framed and on the wall.

The same goes for the $45 or so I paid for a mint-minus copy of Les Baxter's "Space Escapade". One of the greatest 10 album covers - ever.

Several years ago, I paid about $30-$35 for the "Bedside Table"/"Living Well" 7" by Bedhead, and it was worth it. It was the only thing of theirs I didn't have, and I've only found it that once, as it's probably been out of print since I started listening to Bedhead. In the ultimate irritating fanboy move, I asked Matt and Bubba to sign the sleeve for me at a New Year show a few years ago, after being nervous about taking it to a Bedhead show a few years before that.

Amiri Baraka - "Black & Beautiful - Soul & Madness"

Baraka (aka Leroi Jones) started his own label, Jihad, and this is Jihad001. I've seen it sell for as high as $500, I got mine considerably cheaper, but still , of the ~4,000 records I own, this is the most I've ever paid. Cover is in pretty good shape, just a little surface damage and some tape on the bottom edge. The vinyl has a few nicks but plays clean.

Beyond it's rarity, it's a great record. Baraka is joined by a small band and several singers. They sing in a very doo wop style while Baraka shouts Black Nationalism-laced rants over the top. Now, if I could only find the Baraka/Sun Ra soundtrack on the same label.

i have heard that Ra Jihad lp and it's ok, your best bet would be to get the sunny murray lp on jihad w/ albert ayler and don cherry on it. le roi jones is on it also doing his anti whitey schtick. i traded a dexter gordon blue note for it to a japanese feller. all the jihads i have owned or heard sound like whoever was recording it didn't really give a shit. they sound like an esp disc played though a crappy boombox recorded with a $10 mic too far from the speaker.

i sold a ra lp once for $1000
i sold a marvin gaye lp once for $650
i sold a ted brown lp (on vanguard /mucho rare w. art pepper) for $480

the most i think i paid for a record was probably between $50 - $100 for some jazz guys like warne marsh or anthony ortega. i don't collect records anymore, so i probably wouldn't do that again.

one of the coolest trades i did was I traded a dexter gordon dial 10" for a charles mingus 10" called strings and keys which was debut #1.
