Caix is correct, Boombats is wrong. This is not what I was taught in Design 101. Logos can include type style that identify a brand or band as well. No emblem or symbol is necessary, although it can incorporate one, of course.

examples:

and the "fIREHOSE" logo, of course.

Metallica's typography alone creates a spiffy logo.
