Film: The Day Of The Jackal
3I was nuts about the book when I read it, but I haven't seen the original film or the remake(s).
I'll check it out.

4NOT CRAP!
How could this be crap? Classic 70s espionage thriller with all the elements of said sub-subgenre I love.
Kenneth Ross, who wrote the screenplay, is also responsible for Black Sunday and The Odessa File. (If you haven't seen The Odessa File and you dig these kinds of movies, rent it tout suite.)

5definitely NOT CRAP.
I wasn't aware of the remakes, but the one I saw a couple of years ago was made in the 70s. I haven't yet read the book but it's on my list (along with the thousand others I'll try and get to over the next 3 years).
The acting, writing--everything is fantastic. I'm not too familiar with the James Bond series but I'm pretty sure this movie could put most other thrillers/spy-espionage movies of this period to shame.
also, I think It's totally mind boggling that the story was taken from actual events.
