Hey!
I'm finalizing my pedal board (I'm pretty sure) and I think I have space for one of these fuckers in my rig. I'm really interested in the ring mod, as I think it would sound great with my octave with the low pass filter. It's also the least expensive of these neat thinguses (about $250).
Anyone used the others? the MuRF, the step phaser, the LPF? some of the new $600 (holy fuck) ones, like the analog delay?
also, what kind of power supply does it have? usual wall wart?
I'm not going to be getting one for at least a few months, as I'd like to do a lot more research. they do look beautiful, however. and one will fit in my rig, methinks. Which one would you choose?
there's a bit more info if you search "moogerfooger" in the srchfnctn, but a dedicated thread would be nice. Geek out! trash the pedals, talk me out of it! do what you will.
thanks.

that ring mod is great, if you ahve heard our cover of sleep that is the effect I ran my voice though, its a very musical ring mod and has a very "bell like" sound. I wish I could afford one...

3I love my moog ring mod. I find new uses for it all the time. I bought two expression pedals for mine so i have control over the effect / dry mix as well as the freq. All in, it set me back 300. Not a penny wasted in my book.
Your getting 4 effects for the money.
It makes some seriously lush tremolo tones. I like to turn everything down except the drive knob and it does a killer dist tone. The lfo could induce so serious sea sickness in all its throbing glory. Bell like over tones "tuned" using the freq in ring mod mode.
the wall wart is kind of a drag but that would be my only issue with this pedal.
p.s.
Sounds great processing a snare drum as well.
What else is on your board?

4I used a MuRF in the studio a few months ago and enjoyed it immensely. I'd like to buy one myself now. I can't really describe the sound as it seems to be all over the place. Like a really out of control tremolo / modulation / overdrive-ish type of thing, but not. Sorry, that's as close as I can get.
The only problem is that it's pretty unpredictable; the slightest movement of a slider or knob can produce a wildly different sound -- there's not a lot of subtlety. And i can't really see getting any (well, maybe a few) "practical" sounds from it, but it's great if you like to just turn knobs / push buttons and sliders and go with whatever comes out. If you have room for a "special effect" type pedal, then i highly recommend this one.

5I think I remember seeing these pedals at Make'n Music. They've moved, but I remember at their old location they had little sound-proof rooms where you could go in and try out stuff. You could always give them a call and find out what they've got.

The tremolo effect, variable by speed and pitch, is by far the most desirable aspect of the MoogerFooger. I bought a used one on eBay once when I was drunk, and use it maybe once every 18 months or so. You have to be very, very sparing with it, or it will just randomly spew out goofy sounding bleeps, bloops and swoops. Occasionally however, it can sound fantastic with the right application and context. I haven't sold it yet anyway, so...

7thanks for all the input, folks. do keep it coming.
I'm geeked. My rig right now is two pedal boards (two little suitcases, instead of one big board, where each bank can be run independently or chained together). I got these bad ass husky brand aluminum toolboxes from Home Depot ($19.99 a piece). I set all the pedals up in the lid and pad the rest with foam for protection.
it goes:[Board A]
TU Tuner->EHX POG->EHX Hot Tubes->Z. Vex Fuzz Factory (handmade)
into->[Board B (still being finished)]
A/B box so I can run both gtr and my Nord2 into this box (to be purchased) ->Moog Ring Mod (To Be Purchased) ->EHX Li'l Big Muff->Line Six Delay (stored in the settings are 1.reversed 2.reg delay 3.reverb)
all of this goes into my Traynor ts25 which is then run into the first channel of my roland KC500 180Watt keyboard/bass amp w/15" spkr and tweeter).
it sounds awesome.
the low end with the POG is a bass. it really is.

8First of all let me say, MoogerFoogers are great. I own two and used to own three.
I have a Murf because I play in a space rock combo. We have no drummer, so I can set a pulse with it and it can do some great droney things.
It does one thing in various ways. Extremely cool, but maybe not the best use of your money. Try one out.
Heck, you can try *mine* out if you'd like.
The Lowpass is pretty crazy, but in the end, it's just a fancy autowah. I use an expresssion pedal with mine and that makes it more versatile.
Both of these are super handy on keys. In fact, I think that's the best application for the latter.
The Ring Mod is lovely, but again, the problem with these effects is that they cost $350 and you'll probably want to use them sparingly. If you use on on every song people will call you "Ring Moddin' Faiz" you know? The good thing about the Ring Mod is, as stated, you can use it for tremolo effects, bell/chime stuff, or whacked out Devo sounds where the note you play comes out of the other end as a different note all together.
If you don't mind having a few settings marked and twiddling knobs between songs, this effect might do the most for you, but I might suggest taking that $350 and buying:
EHX Pulsar Trem
A cheap, wacky ring mod
EHX nano small stone. The Moog won't do phase shifting (although the 12 stage phaser they make is NICE), but the small stone can do wacky blubbery sounds not unlike a leslie. You can buy all of these and have change left over. Enough for another nice stompbox.
What I'm saying is that these things are the best effects made, but given the cost, and the fact that you will probably want to use them sparingly, I'm not so sure it's the best use of your $$$$.
The upside it that they are very expressive if you want to turn knobs during your performance or use external controls like the rocker pedal and tap switch accessories.
I'll add that regular old effects can be expressive too. The problem I've had with the Moogs is TOO much control, which can be an issue when playing live.
My opinion is set up your pedalboard with the things you need - the stuff that will make the sounds you're going for, THEN, if you have any spare cash, treat yourself to a MoogerFooger. If you decide to use it live, then bring your trusty pedalboard, set up the MoogerFooger next to it, and you're off.
The most useful thing they make is the Analog delay because echo is subtle enough to use on multiple songs in a set, unlike, say, the Ring Mod. The problem is that it's FREAKIN EXPENSIVE. Buy a Deluxe Memory Man *and* a Boss DD3 or DD6, then take the extra $150 and have a party. Or buy a Line 6 DL4, a Deluxe Memory Man and put the extra $75 in the bank. You'lll have 3 various modeled delays that are incredible (or a looper), an a true analog delay.
You can buy the Pulsar, The Small Stone, The Memory Man and a Boss DD3 for less that the Moog Delay.
Wow.
You will be able to do so crazy shit with that.
All MoogerFoogers use a 150ma adapter, but need less than that, so you can daisy chain. No battery option.

PS-Also, I'm embarrassed to ask, but did I ever mail you that switch? I honestly can't remember. If not, PM me with your address and I'll send it out tomorrow.

9Hey Alex,
thanks for the spiel. My guess was that the ring mod would be the one I'd like best out of them. the tremolo feature is really nice, too, and sways me a little. I use a lot of harmonics and this seems like it would bring the odd in a fun way. as far as getting the pedals I need. I basically was going to stop at the AB/AB-Y box (not sure which will do what I want best), but I do have the space, so now I'm daydreaming. they have come down in price by about $100-150, which is part of the reason my interest has been piqued, too.
I used to have the habit of buying the little boxes in bunches, but I'm really trying to simplify my set up. Even now, I use about the same number of pedals that I did in DA but board is smaller, maybe 3/4ths the size. All in all, I've settled on finding the nicest thing I could find to do what I want to do. This one seems more like a "toy", sure, but the POG did at the beginning as well.
It took me over a year and a half to get used to the POG, now I can't imagine not having it in the set up. with that one, I have a very general setting and use the LPF fader to dial in tones from bass->gritty guitar->piano->organ. it's become very simple and versatile now and I'm not constantly moving faders. Just the one.
I'm going to pop over to make 'n' music in a week or two and give the thing a whirl. we shall see.

neat. have you run yours successfully off one of the 9v boss chainers? I have a nicer one made by Powerall that has a bunch of adapters.
