i've had good luck with the beyer m201 on small toms and senn e602 on floor... really lke the audix i5 on both though. plus they are cheap and not a sm57.

Here's another vote for the Oktavas or (if you have the -10 or -20 dB pads and the swivels) the AKG 451s (not the reissues - they don't have interchangeable capsules and don't work with all of the accessories).

Back in the low rent era, I used 58s with the grills removed. This was never the worst thing about the records I made in those days and we had lots of 58s.

Obviously the Josephson e22 is great...but those Oktavas are damn fine choices as well. I've never messed around w/ the modded 57s though.....could be interesting. Just experiment a bit and you'll come up with something that pleases you.

Has anyone use the Audio-Technica ATM450 on toms? The descriptions I've read make them sound like a really good deal.

I like M88's on floor toms and modified 57s on the rack

Jim at Clava has a pair of Sennheiser 406's.
I used one on a guitar cab and loved it. Seemed like it would be great for rack toms. I kind of like those EV mics with the egg shaped adjustable capsule. I forget the name. U87 on a floor tom if you want to risk a busted U87.

here here on the ATM450 for toms. they are choice. and cheap too!

Beyer M201's here too. I think they're slightly more rich sounding than the SM57/58's

i've been using mc/mk-012s for a while. been pretty happy with them but i feel like i need to place them a little further from the heads than i'd like. i record lots of hardcore/punk bands, so the cymbal bleed can get a little out of control at times.

a friend of mine swears by the at450s. i like the side-address - seems like placement would be a lot easier, esp with those drummers that have the cymbals right off the toms.
