Henry Cow

Chris Cutler's book "File Under Popular" is fully of dreadfully tedious prose mannerisms, like the constant use of "&". The unmasticated, rote Marxism makes it all smell so mid-20th century. Yet his band sounds far less dated than their peers, and that includes the less crapular Canterbury bands of the time, like Hatfield. HC is one of the only prog ... ahem, "RIO"... bands that made music that doesn't sound like it was composed in a hash haze. Not that that's always a bad thing.

I just got "Western Culture" and am enjoying it very much. Off to a 'not crap' start with these cows.

Any recommendations for a next album to get?

Fred Frith is currently a professor-in-residence at Mills College in Oakland, Italia. Not only does he play a lot of local shows, but I also see him around town a lot.

And the book was excellent, in my opinion.

Plenty of great RIO-associated bands were excellent as well. Univers Zero, for one.
