No surprise, but my vote is "not crap." Slowing down rap music might not seem all that impressive, & doubling up parts is like first-year DJ "trickery," but the combination can lead to some engaging & even captivating moments & sounds.

In addition, it's pretty fascinating that such a bizarre, avant-garde revision of the original sounds became so popular in the gangsta rap world, considering how conservative a genre it is.

Highly recommended screwed versions: Eightball & MJG: Space Age 4 Eva; David Banner: Mississippi. (Both done by DJ Michael "5000" Watts, but very nice gateways into the experience.)

lots of rappers are insightful. also, many of them are witty, but im after more than cleverness when i listen to music. im also after more than just cleverness in what i read, which is why i avoid lester bangs. not that critics even matter anyways, but lester bangs was a really overrated writer, hes the prototype for the many writers and pop culture aficionados who glamorize punk rock counterculture for the sake of mainstream cheers. michael azerrad followed in his footsteps and hes a buster too.

DXM does have a psychoactive effect if taken in sufficient doses, but that's not what's being referred to. Syrup, Surp, Syzzurp or whatever you want to call it is prescription cough syrup containing Codeine.
