you mean wannabe audiophile nerd alert.
I don't have a stereo. I don't even own a portable mp3 device.

what did you say sonny? let me turn up my hearing aid.
no, I'm not that guy. I just listen to mp3s on the computer thru a very thumpy logitech thx computer speaker system. If I want to really sit and listen (audiophile?), I'll use my grado headphones.
I'll probably buy a set of B&W 601 and get a little T-amp, build one of the bottlehead kits in the future, maybe buy my friend's dynaco if he's still willing to sell it.
a big boon will be finally getting an audio interface for my computer, which will be nice.

a/b..the shit vs. the new.
please?
i don't really want to waste my time. but i will explain what i hear in lament's terms (i ain't too smart): what i noticed was just a difference of perception. before with the shitty record player, my records just sounded like records. nothing particularly outstanding, nor nothing too terrible. just average sounding stuff. a good friend of mine has a really nice record player with a terribly expensive, diamond-studded needle (he's only collected vinyl his entire life, so he takes it quite seriously). he has a lot of the same records i have. the difference i hear when listening to records at his place is that the same records i own sound important and punchy on his turntable (with speakers and amp taken into consideration). and now, my records have that same, immediate level of importance and punch on my new turntable.
to put it bluntly: where once i wanted to listen to my records, i now feel like i have to, in the sense that i've become addicted to the quality and quirkiness of vinyl, a quality that my old record player didn't quite exentuate or wasn't good enough to allow to happen to itself.
it's not an easy thing to explain, but i felt myself instantly understanding all those people who had arguments as to why vinyl is better. now, i wouldn't sit there and say vinyl is so much better than everything else, you should go burn all your cd's and invest thousands into records. rather, if you need a certain audio quality - a need so vital you can feel it in your gut when you think about it - then by all means, give vinyl a try, it will change your music-listening world on the right kind of turntable.

16found one on ebay, 6 days 18 hrs left if anyone's interested. i wouldn't pay more than $500 for it. make sure the cartridge is in good condition. that thing costs $300.

the guy's description is pretty apt: "This turntable will make an analog beleiver out of anyone it sounds wonderful!"

i have a pro-ject 1 that i bought in 1991 that has a grado silver cartridge on it. souds superb.
i could be wrong but i'm almost certain that music hall and pro-jects are made in the same factory in prague. they used to be.

18I've heard good things about that player. I actually just bought a pro-ject rm 5 and got it hooked up yesterday and yes the music hall and pro-jects are made in the same Czech factory.
I hadn't really listened to any brand new and totally clean vinyl until yesterday and was blown away by the sound. I don't want to spend 100's of dollars on one of those vacuum record cleaners, do any of you all know if something like the D4 Discwasher works comparably well?
Thanks

19D4 works great. in fact, when you run out of fluid you can make your own:
75% distilled water
25% denatured alcohol
2-3 drops clear or white dove liquid dishwashing soap.
i mixed half a gallon 4.5 years ago and still have some. i use that with my D4 brush. better than the real D4 fluid.
i got the recipe from mission audio in santa barbara, they sell nice gear, vpi and linn and stuff like that. i walked in and asked for more D4 and they were out. so i said "look, i KNOW you guys know how to make the fluid yourselves." he looked around and grabbed a business card and wrote down the formula on the back.
thanks mission audio guy!
this gave me an idea.

20you could go with a disk washing station. costs a lot of money, but gets the gunk out of the record. i have yet to try one. probably some time down the road. my records sounds good still.
