So I just got this new record player...

The Music Halls are made in the same factory as the Pro-Jects. I belive the Pro-Jects are made on one side, the Music Halls are made on the other.

I compared this thing to the Pro-Jects and like I said, it blew the Pro-Ject away. That's probably due to the cartridge. The Pro-Jects don't come with that nice Goldring, which is pretty costly. It's a good deal just for this fact.

Thanks

I know how you feel. The motorized vacuum cleaners for LPs are really damn expensive. I had used the D4 discwasher brush for over ten years. Last month I gave up and spent the better part of a grand on the entry-level VPI record cleaner.

I really wish I hadn't put it off so long. I don't regret buying it one bit and would strongly encourage people who like to save money by purchasing used LPs (basically everyone) to get one. After cleaning records that I'd been treating with D4 for years, I find the clarity improvement to be very significant.

Think of it this way: if you own at least 500 LPs in need of cleaning, this will make each one sound AT LEAST a dollar better. In this sense, it pays for itself.

Seriously consider setting aside some money from what you spend on LPs for a vacuum-powered cleaner. Or if you're debt-motivated like me, put it on a credit card you'll feel pressured to pay off ASAP.

Before I used the VPI, I tested the incredulous wood-glue method on a record I wasn't attatched to. Said record is now one of the cleanest LPs I own. Very innovative use of carpenter's glue, indeed.

boy, it would have really been convenient and thoughtful if you had posted this in the "What's in Your Hi-Fi?" thread. you know, cause if someone was actually looking to buy a record player/set up, they could just have all the info in one place to compare and contrast, instead of having to root through several threads. though I know you can't be fucked to take a little effort here, because it's just some stupid message board, and who cares, anyway?

good work on the redundancy there, chief.

congrats on the new machine, though. looks nice.
kerble is right.

Geeks like me are drawn toward the hifi/recorded media discussions. Such interest is, in my case, a not-so-indirect result of the quality of records made at Electrical Audio and the folks who create them. It would be convenient and thoughtful if there were a department for such discussions, but I'm sure the baseball fanatics would like their own department too. Hell, a department could be dedicated to "Slint and Coco Rosie Discussion".

Okay, I see your point. I will post crazy carpenter's glue record-cleaning method in the What's In Your HiFi thread, despite said thread being in neither of the departments you've quasi-Kerbled me to.

I think that's the sort of stuff that should go in something like a record cleaning thread.

or this one.

or this one.

or two or three more, if my point needs to be clarified.

I'm not trying to be a dick, and I don't mind tangents in threads. it's a discussion, innit? other stuff'll come up. I'd just like, as a moderator, to see this place have a little organization, so it's easy to use. I'm not going to sit around and delete threads all day or move shit. that's boring.

I do expect forum members that have been here for a while to know the drill, though. If you don't know how to use the srchfnctn, there's a tutorial at the top of the c/nc section with a method that Adam CR suggested that is shit simple to use, and it works with google. there are plenty of tips on how to use our site's search function effectively as well.

a little effort, folks.

i think this is a great thread idea. i've never looked at the what's in your hi-fi thread because i don't have a hi-fi and i'm not concerned with whole set-ups... i am interested in neat record players though, independent from an entire system, so i looked at this thread and learned about music hall, which i had never known about before, and giant glass/acrylic platters, which lead me to investigate other neat companies. a turntable-exclusive thread is a nice. thank you, caix.

but... if you want to get efficiently kerble on it, i guess you could have posted it here: "A Little Turntable Advice, Please?" or "Favourite Turntable".

then you could kerble "What's in your Hi-Fi?" to "What's your Hi-Fi System?" (really, i can't believe this one got passed you).
