Band: The Damned

Crap, :WF: 4, after recalling ex New Model Army bassist Jason Harris, briefly with the Damned to raise a bit of cash, summing them up as the "Grand Dames of Cabaret Punk." Fits them nicely, methinks.

I like Machine Gun Etiquette too, but mainly because I have a perverse Algy Ward fetish. I've got all his crap with Tank to boot, but I'm not proud of that either.

Easily my favorite first-generation English punk band back in the day, probably because they were more discernibly "rock & roll" than their contemporaries, but they were also much faster. Brian James and Rat Scabies were both monsters. They had very tightly constructed songs, and I'm sure I'm not the only one out there who heard "I Feel Alright" before "1970."

When I joined Malignant Growth, they gave me a live cassette from which to learn their songs. The set opened with four Damned covers in a row. Even at fifteen and never having been in a band before, I knew that if you were gonna cover four songs by the same band, you'd better not do them all in a row--and you certainly wouldn't want to open your set that way.

The funniest part was that on the Growth's version of "Neat Neat Neat," Kenny Ogle always sang, "Neat, neat, neat, neat." I guess he figured that if three was good, four was better.

I tired of "New Rose" and "Neat Neat Neat" fairly quickly, but "Born to Kill" was always a blast to play.
