Multiple identities

Anybody here perform, write, record under multiple identities for multiple styles?

I'm ready to throw a little music out into the marketplace, but somehow it doesn't make sense to alternate the metallic distorto-sarcasm on the same CD with the funk-bop guitar trio stylings and the sensitive new-age acoustic trance-tracks.

Maybe three or more performing identities are appropriate. Anybody here in this situation? Thanks for any replies.

Coherence and unity in music: notes, records, projects, sonics, themes, songs, attitude, means of production, whatever are very high up my list of things I like. Some other people (to oversimplify) like things rather more mixed up.

Have as many identities as you feel comfortable with and you feel would advantage what you want to achieve with your music, but always strive to do everything professional and everything strongly personal to you as well as it can be done. This means you may have to make decisions about leaving some things for your bedroom and having fun.

There is a strong and possibly healthy desire for creative people to show the world how broad your tastes and how wide-ranging your art can be. The world does not care. The world would, however, love to hear your really really great record though.

So just try to make really really great things. However, the amount of time taken for mastery of technique, time and energy limits tend to constrain even the most deeply free-ranging artistic people from multiple, public creative avenues pursued to the fullest of excellence.

Did you really just say "throw a little music out into the marketplace"?

If I were you I'd have a think about that sentence for a little while.

Extremely well-put, johnny.

I would say, in addition to thinking about that sentence (and this may be a part of thinking about that sentence), you should give some thought to what you're trying to do within the marketplace. I have heard some records that mix styles quite well, and some that do so terribly. Are you trying to show off how many things you're interested in? Read johnnyshape's post again. Are you trying to sell records? Pick one style and pursue that until you can gain some recognition.

If you're just having fun, then do whatever makes you laugh. Don't take the whole thing so seriously.
