There is only one Crap thing about them: the price. I know they're great, but Holy Jesus Perrywinkle are they expensive...

This is the model I have, a 3001.

One pickup, a volume control, and instead of a standard tone control it has a bass knob and a treble knob. I'm not sure but the neck might be a hair wider than a 4001. I love this bass. Roll off the treble and get good thumpy 60's Jazz bass sounds, crank up the treble and crank the amp for good overdrive, extremely versatile sounds from one pickup. (You can hear me play it one the mp3s here.)

Awhile back, a local used guitar store here had a Ric 4001 that had literally been RUN OVER BY A TRUCK.....and it showed. I don't know how that happened, but I'm friends with the guys that worked there, so I know they weren't shitting me. The thing still played and sounded great. N/C

50/50 experience for me. possibly because i was stupid enough to buy a five string model. the most unreliable bass that i ever owned. (and i have owned some crap) the strap buttons and pick guard screws would start unwinding themselves. i had to have a shim put under the nut to stop an insane rattling whenever i played a certain chord. if you're 5'6" and dont like to wear your bass low the top horn can give you a nice bruise after a gig. weirdest of all after a really long gig a patch of the black paint on the back would turn into a hazey grey for about 15 minutes until it cooled down. now have an aria sb elite and an ibanez roadstar 2 both considered to be lesser basses, i'm happy nonetheless. :D

If you've got $1000 get the rickenbacker. they don't make decent $300 rickenbackers.
