Yeah, I mean what could be more "un-Shellac" than listening to a 120kbps version of the record a mere week before it officially drops?

That's almost like some spoiled hyper-impatient little kid who, the second week of December, can't stop himself from tearing open the stocking stuffers that have been sitting under the tree since Thanksgiving, when the toys he really wants are hidden in the attic till Christmas Eve anyway.

(I like yuletide metaphors.)

His parents have every right to teach him a listen and deny him his train set.

this to me is as much of an endorsement for downloading as it is an argument against. buying direct from a touring band is something I try to do. I did it with mclusky- bought a t-shirt and the three full lengths I'd had on my ipod for a year when i got to see them play. If I didn't have the mp3s I would've bought the albums from someone else.

I think the moral of the story is that we all have differing opinions about "right" and "wrong". My opinion is that if you ever downloaded any album off the internet, whether you enjoyed it or not, you have no ground to stand on when it comes to this particular issue. I'm sure that pretty much eliminates most of us.

I downloaded the album and listened to it last night. It's great, and obviously not in the preferred format. More of a "demo", if you will. Looking forward to purchasing the new record next week.

Meh. I don't think that yuletide metaphor fully works here...

There have been times in the past where I was awaiting an album to 'drop', and then either a friend ended up with a promo copy ahead of time or a DJ played large chunks of the record on air before the release date. In neither case, do you think I willfully said "Oh, I can't listen to that yet - it would be so wrong". Fuck no.

If I was driving home tonight, and someone was playing the new record on the radio, even if it was a little static-y, would I turn it off? Fuck no. I'd know the quality wasn't perfect, but I would be glued to that broadcast and really whetting my appetite for purchasing the real deal.

Having said all that - I haven't tried to download the new record - I was honestly more interested in downloading possible bogus/joke/fake tracks because they might have been hilarious and they presumably wouldn't have been something that I could go out and buy on June 5th.

If you know in your heart that you properly compensate and support artists, then why flog yourself in public becuase you sneaked a peek.

If you bought a copy, and then afterwards downloaded the same mp3s to fill your iPod - is it any worse... is it just about the order of the two events?

download mp3s, then purchase LP = bad?
but
purchase LP, then download mp3s = OK?

That's silly, I think. In the passing of time, what would it matter?

But obviously y'know I do wish proper curses and genital plagues to anyone who would download and then think to themselves "Cool, now I never have to spend money buying this".

I think those type are the only real assholes in this "drama".

(although I can certainly understand anyone who performs/works on a record being pissed off about an Internet leak)

Maybe it is more like the argument for partakers of inappropriate porn or snuff films - you are guilty of encouraging the behavior just by "consuming"?

i.e. If there were no potential downloaders, then there'd be no incentive to be the guy who seeds the Torrent...

OK - I've wasted too much time blathering about this (but I guess I'm not alone there).

I JUST HOPE THIS MOTHERFUCKER SELLS LIKE HOTCAKES.
(then it'll all be OK, right?)
