what i have, and works well for me: an ampeg v-2 ( 60 watts, 7027 jj output tubes) running 4X10" ampeg speakers on the top half of a once svt 8x10". i take an ext amp output from the ampeg v2 to a precision electronics tube pa to power a full range 15" speaker (ported) into the bottom of the once 8x10" cab. my setup is 128 watts. i have a guild thunderbass 2x12" bass cab, that is cool, does not have the MEH!( for bass) also i have a 64 fender bassman and 2x12" that doesn't have the MEH! ( but a lowish volume...does) i like a detailed and aggressive sound. i think a 2x12" cab, sounds great at a low volume for low end, though stage volume you'll have to push the speakers and for some reason most scenarios of a bass through 12's get a bit of mid-range dominant drive. the fender bassman, regardless of wattage, is one of my favorite amps. the default of the single 15": it is blowing the shit out of your shins! the sensory bass will vary room to room. don't you have a mesa 15" cab? for some reason, mesa bass gear does not have a good low end extension (pop punk punchy?) i just puked a little into my mouth. ampeg stock (did) stock their cabs with paper cone (by todays? standards) low wattage speakers w/ a high ohm rating. so, i have played shows, the same single v-2, on guitar and bass and made things uncomfortable in loudness, i am also a terrible musician. so if i had a bassman, i'd like, a 4x 10" or a 15" and 2x10"... i'd never play that bass you have, go direct!
