Miles knew that Coltrane was a pacifist and wouldn't fight back.

I recall reading that Monk witnessed this, and said, "You're John Coltrane! You don't have to take that shit!" And promptly invited him to join his band, then doing a regular gig at the Five Spot. Dunno how true that story is, though. (Porter may not mention this.)

At any rate, the end result is Live at the Five Spot, which is fantastic.

Coltrane. I think Miles covered more territory if you like but Trane seemed to be singlemindedly striving for the freedom finally realised on Interstellar Space. Trane's 1965 records are one of my favorite chunks of musical output by anyone. I'm particularly fond of Sun Ship and First Meditations.

Lately, I've ben really enjoying Miles Davis electric period and particularly Live at the Filmore East (March 7 1970) It's About That Time. This is a ferocious record and I literally hold my breath through parts of it. The Complete Cellar Door Sessions are good too.

I voted for Trane but it's a pretty close thing.
