It s about time...Banfield is back!!!

I hear what you are saying....however, for me, Banfield is pretty hard to beat for this type of stuff. I am not even really into the whole "math rock" sound because of the cold and calculated feel. Don Caballero, Storm and Stress, Battles, and Knot Feeder sound very fresh and organic to me, much like all of the seventies prog bands that I adore.

Most of the other bands that I have heard in the last 10 years that are trying to do this stuff sound like they are trying to play above their capability (or at least stretching it to it's limit) and lack the effortless feel of Banfield.

If you have some bands that you think eschew this and pull it off well please let me know!

I don't really feel that the post-Don Cab thing has much left of merit in it's horse-like torso to flog to be honest. I think it's pretty easy* to create music that adheres to the Don Cab aesthetic, but ultimately (as with Slint) the aesthetic is narrow enough for the subsequent bands to fall into parody quickly.

*assuming you can play guitar/bass/drums.

I agree 100% with your assessment, it is just that for some reason, the bands I mention above just make it work for me and seem to rise above....

Having said that, the new "Don Cab" record is definitely a parody.

Yeah...I don't take this attitude too much, if something is good and fun to listen to then whatever, I couldn't care less if it's original or the best in it's field but I understand what you're saying.

Also, there aren't too many bands like Battles are there? People compared them to Animal Collective due to the manipulated vocals on the new LP but I personally think that's a little like saying Shellac are just Beatles rip-offs because guitars are strummed in the songs.

I disagree, I think the new Caballero record is an excellent piece of accessable mathy rock music, the songs are interesting and fun and they sound like such a different band I wouldn't say they're a self parody in any way at all.

I am curious to know which bands you are referring to.

Bands that I think owe a great debt to Don Cab without pushing the envelope further:

Rumah Sakit
Sleeping People
Volta Do Mar
Piglet

Bands that owe a great debt to Don Cab but evolved from the original themes:

Storm & Stress
Chevreuil
Lynx
Battles
