My parents got these Time Life Legends of Country Music box sets, each featuring one artist and consisting of 6 LPs, in the mail every month. They were sort of like surveys or career retrospectives. I liked a lot of the songs I heard when I was about 7, so my dad showed me how to use the turntable. I listened to Hank Williams and Willie Nelson mostly - my favorites were "Jambalaya" and "Whiskey River."
Then I took a step backwards. I wanted to listen to "cool" music like my friends did, so I asked for and got for Christmas the Purple Rain soundtrack, Culture Club's Colour by Numbers, and Michael Jackson's Thriller. It was 1983-4. Thriller was the one I played most - I guess I loved it. The bassline in "Billie Jean" gave dumb 8-year-old me something almost like sexual pleasure. I think the record had been out for more than a year and I remember being upset to the point of grief about missing out on a year of listening to it.

135First band I remember?
Definitely something my parents played records of
Harry Chapin
and
John Denver
I'm sure I liked something they played before that, but that's the earliest memory I have of liking music...very young.

I don't let him listen to Shellac and The Giddy motors anymore because he goes fucking crazy when it's on and starts running into me and jumping into the wall.
My son, who is 7, is a fan of Brainiac, The Ramones, Devo, Deerhoof, and Mates of State. All of these bands get him in a dancing / wall bouncing frenzy. Im just glad he like some of the stuff i listen to. I fucking hated my folks taste in music as a wee lad.
a 7 year old fan of Brainiac.
you just can't beat that.

138Molly Hatchet, fuckers. I was 10, I had no interest in music and was dragged to a show by a 16 year stoner whom my parents would leave me with while they went to drink on the avenue.
Changed my life.
We smoked weed, and threw stuff. I think MH had like 26 people on stage, most of them were fat. I was fat. Cool.

139It was Santana... I'm not ashamed of this. The first three Santana records are fucking excellent.
Them and Kansas are the first two bands I really liked.
I still like Kansas. Fuck You.
