I just bought a copy of Slint "Spiderland" this weekend after being told to for years, but I never heard it before. After listening to the whole album, I loved it, but I had to go back and listen to "Breadcrumb Trail" over and over; I couldn't comprehend it's badassness. So, it got me to thinking about other songs that made me do this the first time I heard them:

Brainiac- I listened to the entire Hissing Prigs album like 10 times over driving from Austin, TX to Phoenix

Sonic Youth- Expressway to Yr. Skull

Fugazi- the song Number 5 & In on the Killtaker album

The Jesus Lizard- Slave Ship & Seasick

Shellac- My Black Ass

Rapeman- Monobrow

Ruins- the first song off of Tzomborgha

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

the big black cover of "he's a whore" and "bad houses" (i love how the bass comes in on both)

the nick cave and the bad seeds doing "something's gotten hold of my heart" (i'm such a sap)

the ex "thunderstruck blues," "theme from konono" (recorded at EA no less) and all of "starters and alternators" (nice pic in the liner notes, steve)

the stooges "tv eye" and "down on the street"

the jesus lizard "nub" and "mistletoe" (goddamn that riff)

cheap trick "mandocello" (from the same album and directly following "he's a whore")

led zeppelin "trampled under foot" (easily the dirtiest song zep ever wrote, go find the lyrics)

talking heads "this must be the place (the naive melody)" (i already said i'm a sap)

uh...a few (a million) others that elude me at the moment.

EDIT: oh and here's a funny story, i read the bukowski novel "ham on rye" in one sitting with "raw power," "the birthday party: live 81-82" and "goat" playing all night.

I have to listen to songs over and over every day. It's my job.

usually, noisy albums take several listens. i gotta get used to the noise before i can concentrate on the other stuff. so big black, pre-slanted and enchanted pavement, my bloody valentine... all took a couple listen-throughs to really get into. still haven't managed to be able to listen to early royal trux.

It's cool to see the Jesus Lizard coming up a lot. I find their back-to-back combination of "Rabid Pigs" and "Starlet" to be hypnotically captivating.

Scratch Acid's "Eyeball" is also a song that I can't help but play over and over again.

Non-David Yow related? Hmmm. Maybe Black Sabbath's "Into the Void."

I had an addiction to playing 'I'm A wheel' that was significant enough for me to actually post a C/NC about it.

I'd say the ultimate is when you don't even have to play the songs, because they are running through your mind on endless replay loop.

I have a couple of those: "Andmoreagain" by Love and the Beefheart song "Odd Jobs."

The Fucking Champs - The Golden Pipes

The first time I heard the chorus of chugs in this song reach its highest point and then stop - then come right back in, all three guitars, at the exact same time (3:42) I had to rewind and go back a few times just to be entirely sure of what I'd just heard. Truly these men were masters of their craft.
