Dianogah and Lucasfilm or Hasbro?

What I find interesting about Sonic Youth is how with they rather odd music thay play that they have survived savied out for 30 years when most of thier contemporaies did not survive.

The Starbucks thing is a example of what I would call "cool friction" which creates more cool. Meaning you have famious "cool" people pick their faverite Sonic Youth song. That means thease cool people are listening to Sonic Youth enough to have a faverite cut and and add it to the mix tape makeing both them and sonic youth cooler.

Giving Sonic Youth more exposure to people who might not know them through starbucks with a compilation compiled by cool people which makes it a compilation of cool.

A lot of folks here have been saying negitive stuff about thier music mostly that the Geffin stuff is not extreem enough but I think some of their home label stuff is pretty extreem and I saw Thurston play in a 3 hour noise jam with Steve Parino and Uta Koler among others that was about as noisy and in your face as anything else.

So glad they are keeping on keeping on. Found it crazy to watch them on TV on Jay Leno. I am happy they found a way to break through the indie glass ceiling and keep going.

Wow. I wasn't even aware of that. But it kind of makes my point. I don't see getting so worked up over it and calling them assholes or whatever. So Starbucks has a record label and Sonic Youth are planning on releasing a record with them. Big fucking whip. Yeah, it's crass commercialism, but it's not like they're aligning themselves with Halliburton or something.

Secondly, let's briefly discuss this one aspect that is kind of nagging me: There are a handful of folks saying here that STARBUCKS isnt' "that bad," as compared to this or that.

There is even the argument that "STARBUCKS actually HELPS local mom/pop coffee places by increasing the amount of coffee."

If you would spend about 15 minutes or so studying on say, for example, WHO PUTS OUT THOSE "STUDIES" and WHO PAYS FOR THEM, you'd see that you just took a big old slobbering chomp on the ole corporate paradigm propaganda dong.

There is NOTHING, and I repeat NOTHING, inherently positive about a large scale corporate entity moving into thousands, I repeat THOUSANDS, of neighborhoods across the U.S., with the oddly interesting attributes of a virus, whose intent is to "conquer" (their language) and put other smaller, locally owned coffee businesses out on their ass.

Fuck them, and fuck you for not stepping up to the plate when the obvious is right in your face.

It's like saying Wal-Mart is not as bad because they centralize shopping into one convenient place, and sometimes give money to women's shelters. Of course they do, but they also put my Grandpa's family store out of business, and they did it consciously so, without a ounce of remorse.

Again, putting money into your hands from aligning with them, and giving them money from your name is despicable, in my opinion.

i've never been into sonic youth so I don't have any perspective about their ethics, but isn't international activist/lounge act U2 a much more viable target for this kind of anger?

anyone who hasn't had the opportunity to sell out should shut up. it's easy to be on the outside looking in and snipe at something like this. if it rubs you the wrong way don't buy it. easy as that. seems like the people most upset about it wrote sonic youth off years ago anyway.

me personally I think I could avoid putting my music in bed with a person or company offering big money and repugnant ethics. but it's easy for me to say that because i won't ever have the opportunity.

I see alot of this as a fallout from punk and diy ideals, like you're supposed to avoid success at all costs. it's like a clocker bob bourgeois conspiracy against the pleebs.

Other than health insurance and stock options for both full-time and part-time employees, and, compared to similar work available in the neighborhood, the lack of a deep fryer.

You think the nay-sayers on this board would jump at the opportunity to work with Starbucks or some other corporation if given the chance?

Starbucks, or a situation like this, is the way you gauge success?

Starbuck's is everywhere but that doesn't stop me from buying my coffee from an independent coffee shop (Perfect Cup on Leland and Damen) every morning on my way to catch the train.

And I fail to see what's so repugnant about Starbucks corporate ethics. They seem to be one of the less malevolent ones as far as I know, but to be fair a I didn't know that Dunkin' Donuts is now partnered with the Carlyle Group either.
