Any suggestions for a decent ribbon mic, preferably not over $200?
I would of course prefer to get a Royer, but sadly that is just not in the stars right now. It would to 90% be used for electrical guitars.
The guitars I'm gonna record are pretty fat and I want to pick that up, but I don't want the midrange to suffer either. The head that will be used on most guits is a 5150 (don't remember the cab) if that helps with suggestions. The 5150 can have a pretty shrill bzzz-ing thing going on, so I want something to warm that up and smooth it out a bit, if you know what I mean?

try typing "ribbon" in the search screen and limiting it to "tech room" with the drop down menu on the left-ish. that'll be a good start. there are a bunch of useful threads here, and you can at least narrow it down to five pages of stuff or so.

try searching for brand names, like Royer, also.

there's a tutorial on several different ways to search for things as a sticky at the top of the crap/not crap section.

Cascade Microphones has a ribbon mic for 159. They have an add in Tapeop magazine which everyone and their mother should have a subscription to.

Shiny Box makes good affordable stuff. The ribbons with the upgraded transformers sound really good for the money.

I have one. They sound great as room mics, drum overheads, acoustic guitars, dulcimers. Pretty dull and flat, nothing too flattering.

Dude just spend a hundred or somore than that beyer 500 or 260 will be great!

Wish I could say I have. Your best bet for trying mics out is finding a place that has a good return policy and buy a mic at a time and return it if you don't like it. Not sure what you have in Sweden but I'm sure a google search will turn a bunch of stuff up.

Look into the Beyer M260.

Otherwise, if you decide to go Chinese, try Shinybox.

I got a Cascade Victor Ribbon a few weeks ago.

I can vouch for their durability!!!!!!

I was using it as a drum overhead mic when this douche drummer had a little fit after he broke a tom head. Sadly, he accidentally knocked the ribbon mic over and let it SMACK on the ground. There is huge dent on the top and I can see that the ribbon enclosure has moved a slight bit.

This mic still works and sounds good. I couldn't believe it. I was told not to breath on ribbons the wrong way but this thing took some abuse.

Great mic and NICE case for the price.
