UK residents - a vaguely decent internet provider?

1
Dearest UK associates,

The time has come for me to move house (the reasons for which are well-documented here). Oh the joys that await me! Sorting out the utility bills, getting the TV, phone and internet up and running, getting the landlord to change the electricity-on-a-meter system… myself and Dindon are gonna have too much fun these coming weeks.

For the internet – well, I’ve been with NTL/Virgin Media for four years. Four wretched years. The service has always been shoddy, but these last twelve months they have transcended all limitations and redefined shitness itself. A three week period without internet, in which I made at least six 30 minute+ telephone calls, and they sent engineers to the wrong address three times; them trying to charge me for internet at my old address six months after I’d notified them I was moving out of it; and for two months now, the net going down at least once every day, for anything between one and ten hours. Utter fucking shite. I am appalled, sir.

So no NTL in this new house. No fucking way. Who do you guys use? Are they any good? How much do they cost? No of any good deals on the market? I’m mainly looking for someone to advise me as to an internet provider who is vaguely reliable and consistent – between being in a band, maintaining a website, running a booking agency, having friends and relatives in foreign lands, and well, needing to get my daily fix here goddamnit – the constant disappearance of connectivity is a pretty serious disruption to our sad and geeky lives.

I await your counsel! Keepin’ it real and connected in the UK,

S. x

PS - Bonus poll above.

I've been on BT the past year- seems ok. my flatmate sorted it all out and was adamant that we weren't going with NTL for pretty much the reasons you stated. whenever the internet has dropped its just because of the wifi rather than them (i think) and resetting it is just a matter of turning the hub thing on and off at the wall, and its up again as soon as it takes my stone age computer to recognise that its back on. i don't know what deals they do though- i think we've just got a fairly straight broadband package.
Credo!

Thanks Tommy!

That's what we have, I think. And it's been useless :c
