Everyone seems to love this band, but I haven't heard or seen them do a damn thing that wasn't CRAP.

I thought they were a pretty good psych rock band in their first incarnation. I haven't heard much else. Their first ep, and Storm In Heaven, have some pretty great songs all over them. What the hell, NOT CRAP.

They started as a really good shoegazer/psych band. Nick McCabe is one of the greatest modern day guitarists. You have here a really great Shoegazer band who put a killer EP and two stellar albums.

Richard Ashcroft then wanted to move the band in a more accessible/pop direction. Nick McCabe left the band because he did not want to play pop songs. He wanted to keep his reverb all the way up and play his trademark brand of the wall of sound. He eventually was talked back into the band and he added some edge to their otherwise pop album, Urban hymns. At the end of the day even if they put out a successful pop album, the eight minute version of Bittersweet symphony(with the carillon solo) is a massive anthem.

If you have a problem with the pop songs listen to the early material. I have a feeling most of you who are saying this band is crap have never heard the early shoegazer/psych Verve.

Piss-poor indie drivel. Although I must confess to a soft spot for the song 'History', largely for the Will Malone strings though.
