Here in the states they did not receive any press and no one really talked about them. So the media hype did not affect us here.
andyman wrote:When were the Verve not mainstream shite? Did they write something good before they 'made it'?
Yes, see my last post. I posted a few random early songs. This is exactly the ignorant most of you are regarding their early work. Did you even read this tread before posting? Jesus, a lot of you post crap and you have no idea what this band is about other than their last few pop hits.

Why not start threads about Chris Evans, Don't Forget Your Toothbrush, TFI Friday, Cast, Space, Reef, Ocean Colour Scene, Two Dogs, Hooch.

24I hope they get sued by the Rolling Stones again for just existing.

Actually, I did.
I probably phrased what I was saying wrong. See, I was pointing to the fact that other than a couple of early EPs and albums (which may not be shite - I couldn't care), their output was shite.

Yea that song is over 15 years old and a damn good shoegazer staple. Fair enough it's not ground breaking. No one said anything about the Verve being a ground breaking band. They do, however, have good shoegazer songs from early in their career.
I realize this is a loosing battle. Those of you who have decided not to like them will not change your opinion if god himself came down to tell you they are a great band(Which they are.) I've noticed british bands in general are not favored by the majority here and shoegazers naturally fall into that category. Oh well, continue banging on about Steve, Slint, how sandals should never be worn, and how bad you think the stones are. Good day and see you in the next one. JGP

28I can totally understand why someone would defend this band against the current crop of abject shite. A lot, lot better than Coldplay, Snow Patrol and all that toss.
The Verve had a decent guitarist and a couple of interesting albums early on.

I also didn't find the guitar work to be one bit interesting. But the other problem is, you can't really hear a thing on the video you posted. I have 4th generation cassettes copies that sound better than this (I guess that it was ripped from a 6th generation VHS).

30In Britain, there are people who think that not only are Coldplay a going concern, they mention them in terms of the best band of all time. I haven't yet sought legal counsel on this matter but I am assuming the laws in Britain prohibit me from thrashing these people to death with a dull rock. It's a strange country.
Sometimes in life people will tell you they like a certain band and you have to think of something reasonably positive to say about them or you get off on the wrong foot. With The Verve back in the day, I could use some fairly non-committal responses. "Their guitarist is pretty good". "They had a couple of tunes on that first album". "I heard they are quite punctual as people". "I doubt they have caused anyone to miscarriage."
With Coldplay, Snow Patrol and Keane there's nothing to work with. The best I've ever got is something along the lines of "Thankfully, they appear to be carbon-based lifeforms and thus one day they will expire."
