(and now just a touch of BLACK METAL)

Urgehal - Arma Christi
http://www.sendspace.com/file/9uqr8q
"Urgehal hereby presents us with their first full-length offering, 'Arma Christi'. Despite wading waist-deep in early Darkthrone, they still manage to come off somewhat fresh. The production is excellent (in terms of the genre) if you like a raw, but still audible tone. Standout tracks include "The Night Armageddon Comes", "Conjuring the Hordes of Blasphemy", and "Dethronation of God". However, I feel that the album should be judged as a whole. The atmosphere is laid on thick, and it flows together well. Overall, it makes for an excellent listening experience. While certainly not original, 'Arma Christi' is a worthy addition to any black metal collection. The only complaint I could make is that a few songs seem too long. Other than that, this is a great debut for a band with a solid future."

Apparently this is a Portland Black Metal Band

Thy Infernal

"Thy Infernal have quite the reputation among many underground circles and they have earned a slight bit of respect from me for their consistent musicianship as well. This being said, the band is hardly doing anything that interesting or unique. Thy Infernal are the classic "we're hill to slay Jesus" kind of blokes who seem convinced of their hatred and this carries the record from being another stale retread to actually sounding somewhat vibrant. You can't have originality all the time, and when you just want some good-ole' face stomping black metal...Thy Infernal might just stroke your hell's kitchen into a blaze. It's hard for me to admit, but this release is pleasing on a very base level that I can say little to justify on an artistic level.

The songs themselves range from skilled "blast-a-thons" to militant moments that provide a needed break from the hammering/unrelenting crash-beats. None of these songs will grab you and make you dance through the cemetary humming the riffs as a "Funeral Fog" would but it's good enough to not be listed as "bad". Sadly, the innovation factor is close to nil and this will only appeal to those who want more of the same that is currently dominating the black metal underground. Even I will dig this when I'm in the right mood, but I can hardly endorse it as a large artistic victory of any kind.

If you can't get enough blast-beats or common "black metal breakdown" movements I'd say put your filthy little paws on this. If you're looking for something a bit more interesting, forward thinking our unique you might want to start looking elsewhere as this CD provides little of the above.

One thumb up for the effort...but one will remain in the middle because the genre currently needs a lot more than this band is giving it. Put this under "black metal junk food". Tastes good, has no nutrients whatsover."

Cinderella Backstreet's
Last Show 8/73

Image

http://www.sendspace.com/file/prfdpu

In late 1972 Peter formed Cinderella Backstreet with Cindy Black, Scott Krauss (also later of Pere Ubu), Rick Kalister, and Albert Dennisand, after a long jam, asked them if they'd like to form a band. This was completely covers, and largely of course, Velvet Underground material. Rick played most of the leads, his fluid finessed playing clearly distinctive from Peter’s edgy riffing. They'd already been playing together for awhile; in fact, Cinderella Backstreet without Laughner and with Tom Herman is the band on the track Steve Canyon Blues on the rarities disc on the Ubu box set. Anyhow, this is a recording of what's apparently their last show. And beforehand, a rendition of Sister Ray from a rehearsal tape. Very good sound quality all around, legendary recording.

Here are the tracks..

Sister Ray(Practice)
Sweet Jane
Rock and Roll
All Along The Watchtower
Heroin
White Light/White Heat

The recording is cut into 14 or 15 tracks. The extra ones are Peters introductions and stories in between songs.

Enjoy.
Animals are something invented by plants to move seeds around. An extremely yang solution to a peculiar problem which they faced. T. Mckenna

I dont think this reviewer even knew this album is all reworkings of Pavement songs...

Artist: James Carter
Title: Gold Sounds
Label: Brown Brothers Records
Reviewed by Eddie Becton

Text Book Tenor CD coverSaxophonist James Carter’s latest release, Gold Sounds, is a unique blend of rhythms that include funk and blues-laced New Orleans jazz (My First Mine) along with a sermon-induced, organ-clad composition, Cut Your Hair. Joining forces with Carter are talented musicians Cyrus Chestnut (piano, organ, keyboards), Ali Jackson (drums and percussion), and Reginald Veal (acoustic and electric bass).

The gem on this disc is Blue Hawaiian. The appeal of this track lay in its dark, vampish melody, largely attributed to thick bass lines by Veal. Carter’s cosmic notes and Chestnut’s nostalgic textures add to the song’s sense of mystery. Carter’s broad range is best exemplified here because, at times, he’s pensive and, at others, borderline frenetic (in a good way). Stretching the register of his saxophone, Carter massages his instrument, conjuring images/sounds resultant from rubbing an air-filled balloon. Chestnut’s sporadic notes are echoed throughout, giving the track a hallucinogenic feel.

Here’s introduction is serene, primarily the result of Chestnut’s circuitous harmonies. The beauty of this track lay in the interaction between Carter and Chestnut. As the track proceeds, the tempo and intensity traverse from a light simmer to scalding. Carter and Chestnut are the primary foci, but Jackson’s thunderous bombs and Veal’s commanding bass lines are eventually woven into the overall melody, making this one of the most passionate tracks on the disc.

Overall, Gold Sounds is a creatively fresh production, stretching the boundaries of the canon. Musicians/artists shun being pigeonholed into specific genres, and rightfully so. Gold Sounds accomplishes what many musicians/artists strive for: freedom, flexibility, and creativity. If those were Carter’s goals, then he successfully accomplished them, and very well.

Track Listing: Stereo/ My First Mine/ Cut Your Hair/ Summer Babe/ Blue Hawaiian/ Here/ Platform Blues/ Trigger Cut.

Personnel: James Carter – all horns; Cyrus Chestnut – all keyboards; Ali Jackson – all percussion and vocals on Cut Your Hair; Reginald Veal – acoustic and electric bass and vocals on Cut Your Hair.

Steve V...I keep listening to your offerings...and they are good.

That Rapeman radio show is pretty fucking cool...that Rapeman stuff always seemed to me to be Steve challenging himself like he has on no other project...I prefer the Shellac sound...but Rapeman is fucking nuts.
