I recorded this kids kit one time, the kick drum was totally filled with blankets and pillows. absolutly no room inside. Worst sound ever.

oh i agree, most times i personally much prefer the sound of a kick drum with little to nothing inside of it. however i dont assume that drummers do this just because they have seen someone else do it. making assumptions like that is putting my taste in a higher regard than the drummers...why would i do that? hes not my enemy, hes just some dude im recording.

and i disagree that it never works. sometimes i think a drum sound like that is just want the doctor ordered. i think the drum sound on plastic ono band is perfect, and i can guarantee you that bass drum is full of stuff.

i just think theres a lot of stuff you can do with drums, to make a blanket statement about blankets in bass drums saying that sound never works seems strange to me.

It's not that, it's the fact that it feels like instead of you just saying "okay, but I feel this and this way" you are trying to prove me "wrong" somehow and turn what I say against me.. it's just tiresome.. it's a discussion about kick drum sound for fudge sake.
If I were to record a metal band with fast double kicks I would leave it as it were, but a "regular" band without emphasis on double bass drums I would suggest removing all the shit from within the kick, and IF he said "no that's the way I like it" I would of course not argue with him.

There. Now let's get back on topic.

Blankets and pillows belong on a bed, not in a drum.

I prefer the sound when there is something small and light more like a towel or cloth, maybe a T-shirt. Just so it stops the tubey sounding PING you can get from a completely empty drum. But over dampened sounds BADDDDDDDDD, unless you REALLY wish it was the 70s still.

im not trying to prove you wrong. its your opinion so right or wrong isnt an issue. all i said was i can think of a multitude of examples where i find that drum sound charming, think nothing of it.
