I have another question for you Chicagoans.

We're driving to Chicago in a car. I can't find anything on the Pitchfork site about parking. Is there parking nearby Union Park that is plentiful enough to handle all the people that will be at this thing or would we be better off parking somewhere further out and riding the train in?

Thoughts?

I echo this question. I got a $100 collection notice from the city of Chicago for some bullshit parking ticket from a few months back, and i don't wanna park somewhere illegal and get booted.

It's a crap shoot. There is street parking all around but because of the number of people coming it's hard to say what will be available and the city could always be closing off streets and parking spots for all I know. I live a mile away and was going to scout it Friday afternoon and decide if I am driving or taking the bus that night. I'll report back here but you will probably be on the road.

By the way the neighborhoods west of Ashland can be sketchy. In fact the whole area can be sketchy depending on the time of day and what you look like so be careful if you do park nearby.

You need 3 tickets with 3 letters each to earn the boot. But if your plates are out of state and you're parked illegally and the cops are out and about a ticket and/or a boot is possible because they like to be dicks and they might try to earn the city some revenue.

And actually now that I think about it the meter force will most likely be there issuing tickets and not the cops. So watch out for people who look like traffic control with their bright orange vests and official looking clothes.

That's more or less what i figured. I can't really afford to take the chance. Hmmmm. Thankfully i'm only going down to see Sonic Youth so if i get there at 7 PM and need to drive around an hour and a half to find parking, it's really no sweat off my back.

Just look for signs about parking, both permanent and temporarily posted around trees or meters. And not just in front of your car, look down the whole block and across the street. Sometimes you can't park somewhere but the signs telling you are obscured.

And I doubt it would be boots, probably just tickets.

I've heard this. We look like white kids who grew up in South Dakota.

Maybe we'd be better off taking the train from somewhere since neither of us really knows the area very well.

It's just a matter of being smart and minding your own business. There will be so many people there. It's not like you are alone walking down a street at 1 am. I tell you about sketchy more for what could happen to your car while it is parked then to you. Or parking in a desolate area and walking to the car late at night and watching out for other people who are walking around.

If you act like a tourist and carry yourself like a tourist then you might invite trouble. If you mind your own business and put up a tough shell you should be fine. Being white won't necessarily invite trouble over there.

A couple friends of mine were mugged near there a few years ago in the summer around 6pm. But then people can get mugged almost anywhere.

Cool. Thanks for your help.
