At the behest of a trusted friend, I am belatedly checking these guys out.

I remember walking out on a show of theirs at the Bowery years ago (one of those New Music Seminar/CMJ shows, can't remember which) because Anton was berating the audience for not doing enough drugs.

I saw Dig!, and found them interesting as a dynamic, but still did not attempt to familiarize myself with any of their actual songs.

I was told to get Thank God For Mental Illness, so that is where I am starting.

You'd do better with Take It From The Man. Thank God For Mental Illness is really rough around the edges. It's a good album and all, I just don't know if it would make a good starting point. Eh, whatever. The three albums from '96 are all of roughly the same quality. I just give Take It From The Man the edge because it's not as gone as Their Satanic Majesty's Second Request and not as schizo as Mental Illness. And it has way killer hooks.

That said, I can never sit through one of their albums in its entirety. Still, far from crap.

I'd start with Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request, that's the one a friend gave me when I first heard of BJM.

Come on Johnny Thunders did not wait around this long. At least he had some ok songs. Come on its time to stop beating around the bush and OD so imortality can be yours.
