Melatonin. Hormone produced by the pineal gland and (strangely enough) available in pill form without a prescription.
It's effect is hard to describe. It doesn't make me sleepy per se, but somehow makes me more prone to falling asleep if I'm actually trying to do so. Seems to work well with alcohol. Some people claim that it gives them vivid dreams. Also a powerful antioxidant.

2I've never used it, but Diphenhydramine is alright. I've used it both recreationally and as a sleep aid. At a low dose, it does seem to give vivid, almost lucid dreams. Anything higher than the standard 50mg, you won't remember the dreams, though. Recreationally... shit. You kinda got test it out to see how much you need. For me, I take like 12 single dose pills, and it makes you feel drunker than drunk while hallucinating. Then you drift in and out of these hyper realistic dreams.

3Totally Not Crap. I've been taking it for years now.
It will make me fall asleep within 45 min. to a hour. Yes, you will have crazy/vivid dreams.
I don't take it all the time now because it does make you feel a little groggy the next day. However, not as bad as a sleeping pills. Also, I've noticed I will wake up throughout the night, every few hours, but quickly fall right back asleep. Still NOT CRAP.

4It doesn't help me at all.
I've taken up to 6-7mg at one time. Nothing, not even a yawn. 1mg does fine for my wife though, so I guess not crap, but 9 b/c it was bought for me!!

6I was always take it when I'm traveling across time zones to try and battle jet lag. It seems to really help, but I have crazy nightmares. I'm usually OK with that though.

I have super weird dreams with it though. Same thing with Diphenhydramine but I guess Melatonin's better for you?

8ambien knocks me out but doesn't keep me asleep. melatonin did nothing for me.
i recently learned that magnesium taken 45 minutes before bed helps induce and maintain sleep all night and i have to say it's been working like a charm for me.

Been taking it on and off for a few years now. It works well for me, but sometimes after I've taken it for a few nights in a row, the effect it gives me is very unpleasant. Kind of like this tweaked-out, jittery, creepy feeling that mekes me feel like I'm falling or something as I try to drift off into the arms of Morpehus.
Still, never a hangover- not even a little bit. But I never take more than one of the 4mg OTC pills. Heard that lots of it DOES inspire nightmares and probably more of the aforementioned ill-effects.
