I want to find kinda a clankier sounding distortion pedal, I have a boss ds-1 and it takes away the natural tone from my amp, and kinda turds it up a bit. I like playing straight through my amp, but it can be a bit twangy for my style of play.

point of refference of what I'm looking for;

something along the lines of; guitar in 90 day men, (it (is) it), the guitar throughout that album.

Dunno the album, but maybe you're looking for hot humbuckers. If you want a consistent tone and not something you turn on and off, it might make sense to do that without pedals. Just a thought.

Of all the photos of 90 Day Men durning an Google image search I see no pedals being used. I see the same Gretsch being used however and they cla get quite a "clank"

try an eq pedal before your dist. to taylor your guitar tone???

Partially accurate. I have no idea what the fuck you're talking about with the CD player, but yes, you can make a feedback loop for a few bucks.

Also, Barge Concepts makes one which is not only way cheaper, it's also fully buffered, and from my own experience with building a cheap-ass feedback loop that would be basically necessary for standard use.

I'm not sure what they used on the album, but if you play through a mostly clean Fender-style amp, nickle strings, and a single coil Fender guitar, you should be pretty close. There's not really a certain pedal that really help you with this type of sound, so definitely nix the DS-1. Mogwai and Slint have similar clean guitar sounds, but used different equipment, so keep looking.

I hear what you're talking about, and it's kind of an elusive sound, isn't it? It's like it's just past clean, just starting to get dirty in all sorts of abnormal ways.

First - single coils. If you have single coils and the right amp and turn up, that'll probably take care of it for you.

When I want increased amounts of clanky distortion, I take my Highway 89 distortion (homebrew project) and roll down the volume on the guitar. That's a pretty good trick in general, a number of fuzzes and distortions get some excellently harsh tones when you roll down the volume on the guitar.

Other possibilities:

-Treble booster, maybe? Hit the input a little harder, more high end, get some more grind out of it, offend dogs and neighbors, etc.

-That Barge Concepts percolator clone discussed in that other thread seems to have a wide range of clanky stuff going on on its way up to full.

im bringing up this old thread but I've since had to do a little more tone searching.

I've been able to achieve my semi-clean tone, that I like quite a bit, but now I'm looking for that over driven, or boost.

I really like the shipping news tone, specifically in the song "haymaker" and "the human face"

besides a delay, or trem, does anyone know what kind of pedals they might be using to achieve it?

I tend to find user reviews more useful as they're often more honest, though obviously if there's only one or two for a specific item they need to be taken in that context i.e. with a pinch of salt.
