Don't get me wrong
there is a ton of great music out there
but not all of it inspires

I can name two
One very recently:
"End of Radio" Shellac - The album is when
I first heard this song. I've said it before, but
it reminds me I've when I first heard "Doris" in High School

the second song is from the "Cold Mountain" Soundtrack

"i'm going home" Sacred Harp Singers at Liberty Church

this song never fails to give me goosebumps

Wrong place for this admission, but I had never listened to Rapeman until maybe two months ago. I have listened to "Trouser Minnow" at least twice every day since then--it inspires this strange invincibility and savagery in me. Kind of prepares me for anything. So, thanks to Steve.

I also have been playing Brian Eno's "The Big Ship" a lot lately. I just put it on repeat and space out, inhabit its crazy beauty and imagine myself in some sort of internal apotheosis. Transcendental shit, here.

"San Vicente" by Milton Nascimento, too. That voice is so divine it makes me wither. The incomprehensible (to me) lyrics complete the effect.

I've got to say that Sacred Harp is some interesting stuff.

I should probably post this under the "Stuff You Listen to that Your Friends Give You Shit for" or whatever its called.

I have always harbored a strange fascination with this type of singing. But being that I am an atheist who normally hangs around other atheists, I get a lot of shit for admitting I enjoy this kind of music.

I actually work a lot with this particular style of music in my job and in grad school. (I'm a history major who studies primitive baptists, the primitive baptists are fond of sacred harp singing.) Sorry to post so much about it, but its rare that I run across anyone who has ever heard of the stuff, and much rarer that I run across anyone (who isn't a primitive baptist) that actually enjoys it.

Since I had to go off on that long spiel, I guess I'll include something that remotely relates to the original topic.

I've always found Rites of Spring's music to be "goose-bump" inducing and inspiring to boot. I don't have any good reasons to back it up or anything. It just does it for me I guess.

A lot of Guy Piccotta (sp?) singer from Rites of Spring early stuff is great as well - I'm sure you can google to find if your interested (you've probably already heard it though)

I actually got the Cold Mountain Soundtrack because I was blown away by Allison Krauss's performance at the Oscars for Cold Mountain.

When I heard that Sacred Harp Singing i was blown blown away
i'm not religous by any means. I don't see how that should stop me or anyone from enjoying the music.

I got some some old recording of Sacred Harp type singing but am always on the lookout for some more - any recommendations?

I can say that usually Sacred Harp Recordings are a bit of a dissappointment when compared to experiencing it live.

That being said, I do have access to a number of Sacred Harp recordings that were made as part of a documentary of Georgia Folklife. These recordings reflect a bit different style of Sacred Harp singing that is slower and more ornamented than the stuff you heard on the Cold Mountain soundtrack. (Also more poorly recorded which = not as powerful)

If you are interested in these recordings, you can pm me. They are available to everyone. I have to charge a dollar plus postage. (They're part of the university archives collection where I work and that's what the policy is to use their materials) But they are well worth it in my opinion.
