Fucking Keelhaul. One of the most talented metal bands out there. Those guys are incredibly proficient technically, but manage play with a lot of heat and ferocity. Even better, they pull it off flawlessly live as well.

Of Lucifer and Lightning by Angelcorpse is another great recent metal release. Great tremolo-picked, rough, punishing Death Metal with a Black Metal delivery. This is getting heavy rotating from me at the moment, along with:
the Leviathan/Crebain split (two kings of modern american BM create a split release of pure evilness)
Xasthur's Self-Titled E.P. (cacophonous, creepy, reverb drenched BM... feels like you're listening in a stalactite filled cave)
Sigh (some of the most diverse, kick-ass BM you'll ever hear... guys from japan)

as you can see, I really like black metal.
