re: bolt thrower -- i just heard some and i like it, it's funny kind of death-rock... not very slow, not very fast, not the most brutal or lo-fi thing, a little sloppy -- but it has this appeal, good repetitive riffs, steady slow double kicks, and a brawny kind of primitive rock'n'roll meets death metal thing.

re: rwake -- nice folks and as far as sludge stuff goes they have their own kind of melodic twist. pretty epic stuff, and some really funny stoner vs. christian content on their classic track "the stoner tree". it was made better by what guitarist kiffin told me about their local scene in arkansas, how the church literally buys metal bands out, buying them gear and booking agents if they christianize their lyrics... gotta love the line "could give a shit about jesus... i'm too busy gettin' high!!"

hate eternal and nile keep getting more over the top in terms of speed and craziness. it's the kind of thing that's so maxed out that instead of getting more heavy/brutal/fast it ends up just getting weirder by accident. derek roddy does stuff on the drums that doesn't make sense -- it's like blast beats with little foot-activated bells playing half-time rhythms.

So true!!!!
The drummer really deserves to be mentionned in the Best drummer you've seen.... thread.

yea these are all good.

recently i've been listening to graves at sea and buried at sea. funny, they sound alike, and they have pretty much the same name. also, i recommend the whorehouse massacre to anyone who likes industrial stuff.

good new/recent albums:
soilent green - inevitable collapse in the presence of conviction
lair of the minotaur - war metal battle master
cavalera conspiracy - inflikted
witch - paralyzed
meshuggah - obzen
melvins - nude with boots

sometime soon there are supposed to be new albums from crowbar, cult of luna, and the deftones.

yesss

If you like Craft, check out any early Darkthrone up until Panzerfaust (assuming you haven't heard it yet). Craft is pretty much a modern DT ripoff.

If I can get someone to download an album I recommend, let it be Master's Hammer - Ritual. That album is super sleaze loud on a good stereo.

A lot of this (or all of it, perhaps) has already been mentioned:

The first few Burzum records (thru filosofem) are pretty great.

I like the first 6 Metallica records (i'm including Garage days and And Justice For all...) always wanted to start a cover band called Pastor of Muppets.

I'm a big fan of the Burning Witch, Goatsnake, Sunn o))), blah blah blah, stuff.

darker stuff...i like some of the Xathsur, Leviathan, Emperor, blah blah blah type stuff...gotta be "in the mood", tho...

I used to be able to play all the guitar parts on several Megadeth records, but have lost the interest/ability.

Saint Vitus had a few records (mostly the two full-lengths on SST) that i still think are aight.

I wish i was more excited about Boris...i guess i like them in theory, but their records are ALWAYS way too long for me.

I recently went back to the first several Judas Priest records...i've been enjoying them...pretty much up to "Screaming For Vengeance"...it's funny, i remember my older brother being really into them when i was a kid, i would sit around staring at the LPs, just thinking that they were the most evil thing imaginable. Whoops!

The Makai are pretty fantastic.

same with Akimbo.

I truly heart a lot of the Melvins, but have never thought of them as a metal band.

I feel exactly the same way about some Motorhead.

and some KISS...sorry.

There's this band Bloodhorse someone gave me a copy of. i think it's pretty good...same goes for Saviours.

i really like Mastodon.

i am going to see Iron Maiden at the All State Arena in June. I'm kinda excited about that.

Slayer - Reign in Blood and South of Heaven are musts. Still listen to them 20 years on. The last record was not shabby either

High on Fire - I have to admit I was initially a bit underwhelmed (i think because of the trad drumming) but it grows on you and I love it now.
Om is quicker to enjoy. I have just started on Sleep which is more 70s Sabbathy.

Wolves in the Throneroom - I never liked Black Metal until I heard them. They are like a more organic/shoegazy form of Black Metal (i.e they have the drum/vocal style without cheesy keyboards.)

Maybe everbody hates Pig Destroyer but I love them. The drumming and guitar are out of this world. I have a friend who will not listen to them because they dont have a bassist. To my mind they do not need one.

Underrated from the 90s: The God Machine: Scenes from the Second Storey. Not regarded as metal by some (absence of solos, etc). To me its classic "light and shade" metal. Ive never really gone for Neurosis because I thought TGM did it better.

Melvins - Lots of Melvins.
