I think those Pantera guys went to my high school (according to my old sociology teacher).
I really don't like this We Will Hang For That fellow.

Somehow, this takes the frenzy to a new level:

Pantera actually was a very good band. They were not precisely my cup of tea, but I have heard their records and seen them live. They were truly impressive. Certainly one of the top metal acts of the past decade.
Again, I am by no means a "metalhead," but I do firmly believe that something can be good, even if it exists outside one's typical comfort zone.

64All bullshit aside, he was a good guy, and a good guitar player.

65the great white fire was funny as shit. you've got an aging has-been "tribute" band version of great white (a band which was at no time great as their name implied) playing in some tiny club and shooting off pyro like they were still on the arena circuit. i'm sorry but the great white story had many many angles from which laughter could arise.
this dimebag shit is not especially funny. lame as he and his music may have been, it is a shame that something as glorious as music (in whatever form) has to be polluted by some shitbag with a gun.

67i'd say there's no question that darrell was a great guitarist. maybe you don't like the genre, maybe you do, but anybody who can listen to any serious quantity of this guy's work and not recognize that he was a skilled-as-hell guitarist, well i dunno. it sucks that he got killed as much as it sucks when anybody else dies early. it sucks that some psycho thought that the breakup of pantera was worth several people dying over, though i think i have some kinda understanding of the mental and emotional states of "metalheads", to severely over-generalize.
it's not funny, in any way. the closest i've seen to funny with regard to this incident was a friend of mine on another forum making some kinda comment that i don't recall, with a link to a jpeg of a coffin case. that maybe approaches black humor on this one, but still isn't entirely funny.
these two new kids, they suck dick, it looks like most folks are agreeing on that. but we all gotta know by now, the more you engage assclowns, the more fun they have and the more likely they are to keep vying for negative attention.

69Although not a metalhead at all myself, i did see Pantera play live and they were pretty astounding as i remember it. Enough to make me want to go out and buy 2 albums worth. (Vulgar display and far beyond driven). "Walk" is one of the truly great immense riffs of our time i'd say.
But i didn't follow them, and wasn't even aware new bands had been formed.
Still, the whole thing stinks and is a real shame.

70Actually, here's the funny thing. It's a pretty personal attack, but it's just too juicy to pass up -
Some totally unhinged Pantera fan who kills Dimebag because he feels that he's been wronged. If there's any humor to it, it's probably in the stupidity that anyone feels justification in killing an entertainer who doesn't entertain them the way that they like. Not great material, but there's a what-the-fuck absurdity about it that could generate a few guffaws, mainly from those far away from the show, not covered with blood and not seeing another human being killed right in front of them. Keep in mind the central message, though - irrational fan loses all perspective and acts like a dick.
Whatever. That's not the funny part. It's the setup.
The next day, someone signs up on a message board and begins attacking everyone who responds to his unfunny posts. He does not acknowledge the rony of this. To wit: he posts another message on the same board about some band he wants to promote. The band shares the same name as the song written (at least in part) by the guy who is responsible for the message board. And I'm sure you can see where this is going.
So he leaves himself wide open for something like this - "Dude, you think this whole thing was funny and that you're so far above this thing? You're the one pimping a band called Bad Penny and flying off the handle when everyone chews out your newly arrived ass for talking bullshit."
Which is funny.
