That book is unusual in being extremely effective in helping you stop once. If you fall off the wagon and try using the book again you may as well read the Beano.

I quit drinking completely these last couple of months so haven't had the pleasure of investigating the new smoke-free pub environments of Britain much. Cigarettes are the last thing to go, and I'm off to the smoking-cessation clinic at my doctor's this week to get patches. I am really looking forward to being rid of this stupid addiction that makes my lungs hurt.

Smoking is stupid.

If you read the Alan Carr book, quit, and fall off the wagon, go to one of the clinics. You get free backup sessions. Use them if you need to. It does work. 'You' are not special.

I quit three and a half years ago with this method and haven't wanted one, had one, or thought about it much at all in that time. It can be done.

i like smoking.

also, i like not having addictions.

if you're an addict that's your own non-moderating fault.

lots of things are addictive. how many of those are you addicted to? how many do you try every now and again? alcohol, chocolate, exercise, not eating, eating, masturbating, fucking, gambling, etc.

not all of those cause cancer, but some cause death, and all of them have their own set of problems, issues, benefits.

smoking: not crap.
smoking pot: not crap.
smoking crack: crap.

etc.
buy my guitar. now with pictures!

Bollocks. How many of these directly shorten your life by years, and cost you a fortune, and ultimately give you...nothing? That's right, nothing back. Nothing.

I don't want to be a tedious ex-smoker, but this is a stupid set of comparisons. I'm even cool with saying 'it's rock and roll', but comparing smoking with exercise, sex, and food is just stupidity. Alcohol and gambling addictions work on the same repitilian brainstem as nicotine, but even they aren't as insidious. Grow up.

Oh fuck, I'll only live to be 60 or 70 instead of 90, drooling in a diaper. Damn.
Smoking makes people feel good, it calms them down and relaxes them.
It's a social thing, people can sit and smoke cigaretes and talk.
That's what it gives them, to some that's worth a decent amount of money. Some people buy expensive rims and little TV sets for their car, who's to say what's a waste of money?
If people like smoking let them, life's too short to deprive yourself of the things that make you feel good just because it's suddenly the thing to do.
Fuck it, you know?

It's a bum deal, at some point you realize it. Happens to everyone, some sooner than later.
