I chuckled a lot, but didn't really laugh hard at all. Found myself amused by the paper-thin story, but bored with it by the end. The jokes were more witty than an Adam Sandler movie, but a lot less incisive than stuff you'd see elsewhere and less than they could have been.

It wasn't crap, but it wasn't great either. Decent enough way to spend a couple of hours.

My sentiments exactly.

I saw it last night and wasn't disappointed. It was Homer's movie and his hijinks carried it for the first hour. But the Bart/Flanders subplot seemed a little off to me. I liked the jabs at media, government, and religion, as always.

NOT CRAP

I hear there were 100 drafts of the script. Sheesh!
Check out your mind.

I wasn't too impressed but I was having a really shitty day so maybe I just wasn't in the mood for comedy.

At it's best The Simpsons works on three levels. First there are the simple, more visual gags that kids can enjoy. Then there are the regular jokes that make up most of the show. Then there are the intelligent and more subtle jokes that require either a bit of intellect or cultural references outside the mainstream to appreciate. I found these last types of jokes to be lacking. (Or I just didn't get them.)

It seemed to be aimed mostly at the middle tier of fans. The people who will burst out laughing at any bit of visual comedy or any mention of something that could be funny without the joke actually delivering. And everyone in the cinema but me seemed to be this kind of person.

So for its target audience it's a success but I wanted more of the funny and less of the slapstick.

Also, if you're working on a script for 3 years and the only joke you can come up with for Otto is that he's holding a bong then what have you been doing? If this was the writers going all out then perhaps it's time to end the show.

Not Crap but in the same way that I'd vote Not Crap on my Mom even if she was convicted of a triple homicide.

edit: This is a very good point from someone on imdb:

Now, stupidity has always been a source of laughs for comedians, and it is a very rare occurrence to find comedy where idiocy is not only present, but is presented with intelligence and grace. It sounds like an oxymoron, but to see such an idea realistically fleshed out, look no further than the fifth season of the Simpsons. Today, as exemplified by latter episodes and now culminating in the film, Homer is simply stupid, not intelligently dumb.

I watched it this morning online and was really, really glad I didn't spend the $9 to go see it in a theater.

I love the older episodes of the show but the past few seasons have really been a let down. This movie was a very watered down version of one of the newer episodes.

Agreed. I saw a rush hour screening for $6. Got about 6 laughs out of it.
