This quote alone makes this thread NOT CRAP
"Pro Tools is too California Hollywood bullshit.”

I remember being at a party, fairly recently(2000), where The Dan was on. I recall that there were lines being done in mass quanitites, groans coming from the bathrooms, huge Optimus speakers with nuclear reactor sized woofers, and really shitty
shag carpeting.

I then realized that no matter what party you're attending, if Aja's on the stereo, it's always 1977.

Yes, CRAP.

There is nothing whatsoever guilty about my pleasure.

Those youtube clips of them making the Aja record are fuckin' badass. I still can't get over how ridiculously in tune Mike McDonald's backups sound on "Peg" when Fagen and Becker are sitting there at the board soloing them.

As an aside, I recently had the chance to ask Steve Gadd about some of the back-story surrounding the record and his solo on the title track, and it was really interesting to hear what he had to say.

I can't help but love this band - - I just picture my dad sitting around my parents' coffee table in 1982 with a fucked-up afro, cutting huge lines on the Gaucho sleeve.

Not Crap.

Basically, Becker and Fagen had had that tune for a while and, finally deciding to do something with it, had a number of different drummers come in and give it a go. Well, apparently they weren't happy with the results (you can see this same type of thing happen on those Youtube clips when, after however many guitarists try in vain, whatsisface finally nails the winning solo on one cut) until Gadd came in and nailed that bitch on, like, the second or third take.

As for the musical ideas he played during the solo, he had been fuckin' around with different orchestrations of ratamacue-type-ideas, breaking up various strokes among various drums and cymbals, so these sorts of things naturally surfaced in his playing. To be honest, he went into detail about a bunch of other shit, but all I could really think was "fuck, Steve Gadd," so my memory's kinda hazy.

They had better hooks and more fun depraved, fucked up song content than the rest of the yacht rock croed that's for sure.

However, I saw some live footage of them on PBS or sumshit and it looked like seeing them live was about as much fun as maybe watching the Brown Bunny backwards.

They have good songs, but so much of their audience disturbs me a bit. It's like...I'd read an interview with Christian Bale when he talks about interviewing Wall Street types as research for American Psycho, and he was disturbed to find out that a lot of those pricks thought Bateman was really cool and were all like "Bateman, yeah man." Those shitbags all probably watched In the Company of Men and though, "yeah, I want to be that guy."

That, unfortunately, made up a good part of Steely Dan's audience.

The guys themselves, of course, look like shit. Still, I've read interviews and things with them and, they may be assholes, but they're also kind of funny and self deprecating.

Oh well...still giving them a not crap, on their divisiveness factor alone.
You call me a hater like that's a bad thing

My good (and now sadly deceased) friend once said wisely, "Gin makes people go crazy." We were talking about my like of gin and tonic. I believe my friend was correct, but that still doesn't change my taste for the stuff. The good stuff, anyway. A professionally made Tanqueray with tonic is beautiful.

And I don't know shit about Steely Dan and I doubt I really want to, although the lyrics seem as if they could be interesting.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.
