how to choose a pickup

Tim--
I recently purchased one of the new fender jaguar baritone custom guitars. While I'm mildly happy with the sound of it, the gain of the pickups kind of sucks in comparison with that of the pickups in my bass. When I switch between the two I have to crank the level and gain on my amp which is kind of a pain. As the baritone pro of the message board what would you suggest? I mainly just want a loud clean sound, and something closer to that of a bass as opposed to a guitar. I would prefer something single coil so that I wouldn't have to carve a bigger space for a humbuckers. Anyone else with suggestions please let me know. Thanks.

a friend of mine in DC used to rave about fralin p-90s as being the best pickups there are. since that's two of you now saying fralin is the man, maybe i will contact this fralin and ask him which neck pickup for him to sell me. i need no EMG. i have two of the EMG already, and these are the active pickups. i don't need the active pickups, no. these passive pickups from the fralins, i will get to them.

wiggins, my musician has two coil-tapping humbuckers standard in it (and i think they're *alright*), they're wearing covers of some sort i think, because they are solid silver in appearance. my ibanez studio on the other hand has these cream-colored ibanez humbuckers that also have the coil tapping, these pickups i think sound great! i was gonna say they're v2 pickups, since that's what they look like, but from what i've found on the net, the v2's didn't have coil-tapping. i dunno if the guy who modded my guitar split the coils himself, which is entirely possible, or what. but i really dig those pickups.

what do yours look like? black? silver metal cover? cream colored?

hey rob, does your amp have two separate inputs? if so, you could switch the input when you switch instruments, having one gain set for the bass and the other for the baritone. another option, which is a little pricey but i still highly recommend, is the Super Duper pedal from Z.Vex... you could set the boost for the channel on the right to be whatever you need it to be for your bass, and then set the channel on the left to whatever you need it to be for your baritone. i suspect that they would both sound better than they have before, as well. it's a weird little pedal, in that i can set it up so it's doing next to nothing, but when i take it away, i miss it. and the two channels of ultra-linear gain would allow you to basically have only to push one button when you swicth from one instrument to the other. you wouldn't even have to mod anything. only problem is the price. i'm sure somebody makes something that is similar (i.e. two independent gain settings in a pedal) and cheaper, but i can't in any way speak to the quality of whatever it is by whoever makes it. the Super Duper, i like a lot. i pretty much don't play guitar or bass without it anymore.

the pickup covers are ugly and black, and the pickups are eternally sealed within their abyssial depths with wax or epoxy of some sort. she does not have the coil tapping. every musician ive seen online has coil tapping standard, as well as some sort of finish, and looks more like a PRS than an alembic- (i guess) copy like mine.

these v2 pickups, are they readily available do you think?

or, i think P-90's will fit in the holes, does a company make humbuckers with coil tapping in the size of p-90's?

The (esteemable) Midge, whose band's latest cd i recently purchased and enjoyed wrote: like, to wiggins' question: you just want good-sounding pickups.

haha yes of course! such a way with these language you have, signor The Midge! such minimalist! such of the grace! salut! for putting to words simply what i simply could not!

ive never purchased or installed aftermarket pickups before, i just used to borrow a friend's guitar, or was never that picky. or wealthy. but these fuckers in this guitar now are just plain detestable and must leave post-haste.

thank you for help!

fralin p-90s

I've heard Fralin stuff is good, I've only had him re-wind and pot 50's P-90's that died.

Based on those, I figure his P-90's are swell.

The Gibson Humbucker sized P-90's sound good, too. You can turn the volume down and they get pretty clean. No need to split coils.

I'd still try the Stag Mag in the Neck. It's as close to the best of both worlds I've used so far.

duncan Jazz model ?

That would be good in the neck too, but not as chimey as the Stag Mag.

Seymour Duncan makes a great Firebird mini humbucker that would fit, or a Custom Shop 12 pole Mini Humbucker. I don't know if they have 4 wire leads, though.

TMH, one other possibility - from your description (5/6th post of this thread) you might wish to consider either the Seymour Duncan Vintage rails, or alternatively, if you're really fussy, get in touch with a bloke called Chris Kinman, in queensland, Australia - he custom designs pickups, and they're exceptionally good. I have a friend who has very good ears - and fingers to match - and I trust his recommendation.
Chris would be the perfect guy to talk to about this. If you're interested, PM me and I'll get you his details.
