Come on, Nels Cline might have been underrated for about 15 yrs but the guy is on the front of Guitar Player or whatever magazines you have in the US. It's like saying Mike Watts underrated - he's justifiably highly rated much like Cline.
And Steven Vaughan's bass playing for PJ Harvey was spot-on. Great, great bass player. In total agreement about Polly Harvey too, I can't think of any other player who had such a big effect on me when I was learning to play.

Agreed to both.

164What do you class as underrated? Most people are better on guitar than me and I think I am better than Jimmy 'Dead on the toilet face' Page....he stinks.
So.....
Niko Wenner - Oxbow. His guitar playing scares me, if I ever write a guitar part like 'Gal' (Let me be a Woman) I would die a very happy human.
Kevin Shields - Not technically, he is rubbish in that respect. I worked for MBV for 2 years and his guitar work still freaked me out after 100 shows.
Greg Sage - He should have written a book on it.....we could all name 20 GenX guitarists who played the tennis racket in his honour.
Evan Dando - He could play a bit when he wasn't full of smack.

Jimmy was sloppy but he was still a very good guitarist and a great musician.

c'mon, "rebel, rebel" "jean genie" "ziggy stardust."
or is that all mick ronson?
Bowie often played (acoustic) rhythm guitar on his recordings when Ronson was in the band.
If it's not too obvious of me, I'll also submit "The Man Who Sold The World." That song is just truly creepy, especially with Bowie's phased vocal.
The promo video for "Jean Genie" has Bowie playing a Les Paul, so he might've played rhythm on that.
Pretty much all the guitar on Diamond Dogs was Bowie.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

167Anyone mentioned Marnie Stern yet? I'm liking most of that, even the finger tapping is unforgivable if you convince yourself it's ironic.
Joanna Newsome, that's one fucked up guitar she plays!

what kind of guitar is the guy on the right/foreground playing? it looks awesome and beaten up.
That's a westone thunder I believe. The guitarist playing it, Tim Smith (Cardiacs) only ever plays cheap guitars claiming he can't tell the difference between good ones and shit ones. That might cause some discussion.
This was the only picture I could find of Bic Hayes actually playing on the interweb. I should have posted this link of him on you tube instead...

Drummer Dave Francollini is pretty fucking awesome aswell.

170I don't know how much flak I'll catch for this but...
Izzy Stradlin
Seriously though. That guy wrote a good portion of Guns N Roses better songs and was a hell of a rhythm player to boot.
I'm not really sure how underrated he is really, but he (believe it or not) was who originally inspired me to start playing guitar, so I guess I'll always think he's underrated.
That being said, I never understood his Keith Richards clone look.
