Long Lost All Ages Spaces: The Outhouse in Lawrence, Ks.

Okay, I grew up in Kansas City and would often make the forty-five minute drive out to the outskirts of rural Lawrence to see punk/hardcore/indie shows at the one time tractor salvage garage that became the one long running all ages space in the area.

Some people hated going there, some people hated playing there, some people grudgingly admitted it was the only place that could keep it going without too much fire marshall interference, being out in the corn/soy fields as it was. Still, the people who talked the most shit still get nostalgic and misty eyed about it.

For the past ten years or so, it's been a BYOB titty bar.

Anybody else have any thought, recollections, memories of having played, gone to shows there, etc.?

The one time I was ever in Lawrence Kansas was in the spring of 1992 to visit my friend going to KU. We saw the Meat Puppets at the Outhouse. It was a good show. He lived in Hashinger Hall

Also both my parents went to KU in the 60's and got engaged there. My mother lived in Hashinger Hall when she was there. My Dad lived off campus with a guy who blasted Bob Dylan records all day long.
it's not the length, it's the gersch

That's interesting the Meat Puppets played there in '92. I missed that show, but that would've been right around the time they were on a major and being name checked by Nirvana, huh? That show must've been packed, I imagine.

I'd actually seen Nirvana there in '89. They opened for 24/7 Spyz (it should be obvious the two bands weren't touring together, that's just how the night was booked.)

Oh yeah...and I saw Jesus Lizard and the Laughing Hyenas at Hashinger Hall for a buck. This was in '90.

I was kinda hoping Steve might weigh in, because I'd seen Rapeman at the Outhouse and, a year or two later, he was playing with Flour, I think, and I believe he got kind of stiffed by the promoter that night. That's what went through the grapevine anyways.

I'm actually thinking about trying to start a documenatry on the place. There are a lot of intertwined stories surrounding it, including some death, depravity, and a lot of drama.

I dunno...

I spent a few months working in Lawrence last spring and liked it a great deal; I came across the Outhouse while I was out cruising the countryside getting to know my way around. Funny that it's been around so long.

There are some cool places there; I especially liked the Gaslight, the Bourgeois Pig, and Joe's Bakery, and caught a great Mogwai show at the Granada. Thumbs up on Larryville.

KU? As a town?

Anyone?

Hmmm...?

....?

Stayed there with friends of friends who are now friends while a hurricane was throwing trees into my houses. I remember walking down the street and seeing people smoke pot on their front porch. I'm not really into front porches or pot smoking, but I was glad to see that they were out there doing it. That Ethiopian restaurant is pretty good.

Sadly, my only experience with The Outhouse was years ago under it's current incarnation: BYOB Strip Club Shithole

But I did share a kitchen at Jefferson's a few years back with a crack-y (well, more meth-y to be exact... thanks for that Marinol, though) older gentleman who repeatly regaled me with the same story of seeing Nirvana play there & Cobain being electrocuted.

I'm sure I would have enjoyed it as a shithole venue of music than a shithole venue of herpes & stretch marks.
