Can you name any solo artists that had work that surpassed that of any of their previous bands' work?
The said band has to have put out a record of some kind and can't be just some high school garage band.
The only one I can think of is Neil Young.

2I should also add Brian Eno. This is definitely a lot more subjective - while Roxy Music certainly are a well regarded, influential band, I've always enjoyed Eno's records much more.

3Elliott Smith. Heatmiser wasn't a quarter as good as his solo stuff.

5Dave Pajo.
Pick any band he's been in, and he's done an Aerial M/Papa M thing that's better.

6Oh another I forgot to mention was Tara Jane O'Neil. Her last couple of solo albums have been quite good. I really dig it over Rodan and the other couple of bands she's been in.

7Neil Young.
Maybe Curtis Mayfield. Marvin Gaye. Chuck Berry.

Better than Slint? Fuck that twice, partner.
Hanatarashi is better than the Boredomes, Tara Jane O’Neil is better by her lonesome than in any band she’s been in, Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music is the greatest record ever made, the best of Gate exceeds the best of Dead C and Brick Layer Cake just about matches Rifle Sport. I’m also fond of Lou Barlow’s last E.P. Really fond.
