I've done some more reading & found that some clocks do use the input line frequency - looks likes it's stuff from the 70's and earlier - LED, analogue clocks etc. There's these binary coded decimal clocks that used to need you to change a frequency setting to use it in an area with a different power supply, now it detects the chamge automatically. I guess some manufacturers didn't envisage people traveling round the world taking their electronic devices with them.

So Apologies - that was a very good question. I can't see it being a problem with most digital & audio stuff these days though.
