Crazy Horse doesn't count. Neil was never in that band--he took an existing band and appropriated it as his backing band.
He was, however, in both the Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. His solo work released during and after his tenure in those bands is much better than the records those bands released.

Agreed. And while we're on the country rock tip, how about Gene Clark, Gram Parsons, and Mike Nesmith? I value their solo careers more than what they did with their respective bands.
Curtis Mayfield is a tough, tough call. I love his solo records, but I'm not sure they outweigh all those great Impressions records. I think the Impressions had more great songs.

Built to Spill originally formed as Doug Martsch + a rotating crew of backup musicians, but I suppose they don't count, as they eventually morphed into a real band.
