I don't think anything Sonic Youth released after Daydream Nation is very good. I especially don't like their improv noise jams (not just on SYR): it's not where their strength lies and it comes off sounding cliche and directionless to me.

I always tell people my favorite Sonic Youth record is Confusion is Sex, even though it doesn't work the best as an album (Sister) and it has a couple of clunkers (Protect Me You, Making the Nature Scene). I say it's my favorite Sonic Youth album because it is. No one has made anything like it.

I really, really like the Kill Yr Idols ep. Confusion is sex next, and not a whole lot else.

SY could put out 1000 awful records, but will always be redeemed by Confusion is Sex and Sister.

I'd say they put out only 3 or 4 awful records.

Dirty, Experimental Jet Set Trash & No Star, NYC Ghosts & Flowers, Rather Ripped = CRAP

Goo, Washing Machine, Murray Street = in limbo

The rest is more or less stellar.

They play here the day after tomorrow. It seems I won't see them.

It's the only other thing in their catalog that remotely resembles the Sonic Youth/Confusion Is Sex/Kill Yr Idols era. With some beat poetry, fine. The poetry ain't no great shakes, but it's not embarrassing. It's mostly great, especially the title track, "Renegade Princess" and "StreamXsonic Subway". And what is really wrong with the rest?

Sorry dude but NYC G&F is pure horseshit from start to finish

I like NYC Ghosts & Flowers. Lee's title track in particular is very nice.

A Thousand Leaves, meanwhile, is 85% shit. Shitty shitty shit. Absolutely their worst album.
