Last night I saw The Musical Box, a Genesis tribute band (!). They re-create the "good" era of the group ('72-'75) on stage with props and vintage Mellotrons, Arp Pro soloists, etc.. It was pretty killer, even though our girlfriends made fun of us for going. The Peter Gabriel guy was a riot, and even some of the between song banter was lifted from old Genesis bootlegs. I'd recommend it to just about anyone.

excellent one

the first album is 'pretty good,' the meaning of which i diminish by putting it in 'quotes'

otherwise, this is a bad band. they were bad pretty much all the time. latter-day genesis is quite terrible. very bad music, and i have to say, due to how bad it is, that it is crap, and genesis (the band) is crap

you know, i have one of the first LPs and i think its pretty horrible other than a few cool basslines...however, i really like alot of their hits from the 80s such as 'land of confusion' 'no reply at all' and my favorite...'turn it on again' which i plan to cover sometime with me playing all the instruments...

andyk who voted crap

Mellotrons, Arps, P. Gabriel rocking the silver face paint...I'm strongly in favor of all that. But I can't get into it musically. As rock spectacle it's not crappy.

As T. Midgett pointed out in one of the Ranks, Phil Collins divorced his wife via fax.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I think that the latter-day Genesis is not only crap, but Krap with a capital K.

However, I cannot classify early Genesis (actually, the era that the Musical Box recreates) as crap because growing up they meant so much to me, and taught me a lot about how Gross Rock Spectacle, in the proper amounts, can be a good thing.

I've seen Musical Box, and they are great. They embrace the Gross Rock Spectacle in all the best possible ways.

Because the early Genesis is so beyond Not Crap, it negates the Crap aspect of their later "work".

So I vote Not Crap, by reason of historical greatness.

I think Genesis records from 1970-1981 (including Abacab) are quite good. My favorite is "A Trick of the Tail" which has no Peter Gabriel on it whatsoever... Of course, "Foxtrot", "Selling England" and LLDOB are beyond brilliant. If you go too early ("From Genesis to Revelation" - 1969), they sound just like the Moody Blues. If you go past 1981, they sound like severely retarded 80's music.

There's a myth that Peter Gabriel was Genesis, or the best era of Genesis. This is simply not true. He gets a lot of credit, because he's the one who went on to a solo career that didn't completely suck. Most people credit the lead singer for everything, even if he just sings, plays a flute, tambourine and kick drum. During those old shows, he wouldn't even be on stage for 40% of the show. I'm not slamming PG at all. Let's just be fair. He was not the sole contributor (or even major contributor) to their sound.

The albums after PG left are some of my faves... "A Trick" (as I mentioned) and "Wind and Wuthering" are great. Phil Collins did not ruin the band. I also enjoy several Brand-X albums. Morrocan Roll is brilliant. Phil Collins singing in Sanskrit?!?

Tony Banks was a major contributor to Genesis, from the early days to today (I think he and Mike may be the only original members left. Phil Collins quit a few years ago).

As far as PC, he answers his emails and letters from fans. I don't think divorcing his wife by fax damns him at all. I like the movie "Buster".
Although, he never answered my letter. It was on 8 1/2" X 14" paper, and in large type, it read: "Phil, why do you suck so bad now?"
