I'm looking for some spooky fiction. I can't get enough for my late night reading.
I loved House of Leaves in spite of the pretention, the Exorcist was solid, Lovecraft and Poe are usually good, King's short stories and the Shining are really good. it's a shame about his other crap.
Richard Matheson is incredible. I Am Legend and the Duel collection were both great. Rosemary's Baby is just ok. I keep stopping, though.
I've been reading the Town That Forgot How to Breathe by kenneth something or the other, which, after a slow start, is actually quite good. I bought it on the strength of the cover.
any other recommendations?
please and thank you.

533Black Water: The Book Of Fantastic Literature

It's a collection of fantastic short stories by a myriad of great authors. Most of these tales are very creepy and spooky and every single one is unbelievably good.
HIGHLY recommend it.

Perhaps not what you're looking for necessarily, but the first story in 'Fantastic Stories' by Abram Tertz creeps me the fuck out.

536Brett Eugene Ralph wrote:What Ever Happened to Gloomy Gus of the Chicago Bears? is a quick, fun read. The short "fictions" collected in Pricksongs and Descants are a blast. Maybe that's all I've read by him. Gerald's Party is on my book shelf, but I can't remember anything about it. I've always wanted to read A Public Burning, too, which I think is a novelization of the Watergate scandal.
I just finished 'Gloomy Gus' by Robert Coover last night. Thankyou for the recommendation! It is truely a quick, fun read. I smiled a lot as the absurdity unfolded.
I've begun rereading 'I Am Thinking Of My Darling' by Vincent McHugh. I think it might be my favourite book.

Church of Dead Girls by Stephen Dobyns is suitably spooky and an enjoyable read. He's a poet first, so the writing is pretty excellent, particularly for a thriller. There's a sequel to it, too, something like Boy in the Lake, but I haven't read it.
