What is this silly bass I have just bought?

If I have understood the serial number correctly, it appears to have been made on October 24th, 1993.

In 1993, Nikki Sixx was the face of the Gibson Thunderbird:

Thanks for the tips on getting the sticky stuff off!! I think I will get it cleaned up, looked at, and then sell it.

Sorry Lee, I'm hoping to get more than $100 for it on ebay...

He went to bed about a decade ago, or whenever he sold his soul to the bankers and the elites.

Somebody who stole it and didn't realize what it was worth, or, maybe, a rich kid who got it free from his parents and didn't give a shit about the fact that he was basically flushing $1000 down the toilet. Or somebody totally, TOTALLY whacked out on drugs?

I'm guessing it's the first.

A guy who has to go back to Japan tomorrow and can't afford to pay for the import tax and extra baggage money.

Poor bastard.

The crazy thing was, he originally asked for $100, but when I got there he only wanted $40.

I'm translating the costs for people here (approximately) because most people are American and people don't understand our funny little money

but alright then, he originally asked me for £60, but in the end I only gave him £30, but got a stand, a ridiculously shit amp and two decent leads for my money - so effectively I paid about £20 for the guitar.

So, so good.

Y'all is ignoring that I just went round this guy's house to buy a guitar he was advertising on an internal student message board (I work at a university). It's all totally legit.

My guess is that it's a combination of several factors... he's probably rich (not cheap to come to England to study form Japan), so doesn't care much. Maybe he didn't even play it any more. He'd have had to pay out a small fortune to take it back to Japan on the plane - he's going tomorrow morning. Probably completely forgot about it? I think it's insane too but I guess I just got very, very lucky.

He didn't speak much English anyway, so he didn't really explain anything to me. I was there about two minutes.
