My guess is that it's a combination of several factors... he's probably rich (not cheap to come to England to study form Japan), so doesn't care much. Maybe he didn't even play it any more. He'd have had to pay out a small fortune to take it back to Japan on the plane - he's going tomorrow morning. Probably completely forgot about it? I think it's insane too but I guess I just got very, very lucky.
He didn't speak much English anyway, so he didn't really explain anything to me. I was there about two minutes.

Yes, I AM jealous. I find those basses kinda sexy. Sexier than Meg White getting banged, but less than Jack White getting punched in the dick.

If it is a set neck (not bolted on) and says 'Gibson' on the headstock, it's probably real.

29If it's a Gibson Thunderbird, it does not have a set neck, but a neck-through construction with "wings" glued onto the neck piece.

30Summerlin has just informed me that Old Basford recently had a Gibson Thunderbird bass nicked from them.
