Lot of crap out there, but have been listening to black metal and got into sonic youth and such later. Anyways, if you listen to it for awhile, bound to come to the same releases as other people.

My favorites:

Blasphemy, Fallen Angel of Doom and Blood Upon the Altar
Samael, both Worship Him and Blood Ritual.
Beherit, Drawing Down the Moon
Mercyful Fate, Melissa and Don't Break the Oath
Mayhem, the true only, stay away from the reformed bs.
Root, Zjeveni and Hell Symphony
Incubus, God Died On His Knees
Morbid Angel, Abominations of Desolation
Sepultura, Morbid Visions and Schizophrenia
Sarcofago, INRI and Rotting
Pagan Altar, Volume 1
Pentagram, early daze stuff, relentless, day of reckoning
Candlemass, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Rotting Christ, Thy Mighty Contract
Hellhammer and Celtic Frost, To Mega Therion and before
Sodom, Obsessed by Cruelty (make sure to get the LP version, two mixes to this)
Von, Satanic Blood
Necros Christos, everything, full length is so good
Archgoat, everything
Death SS, get the comp with the Evil Metal ep and earlier stuff
Black Hole, Land of Mystery (good luck finding this)
Negative Plane, Et In Saecula Saeculorum
Mortuary Drape, everything before buried in time.
Satyricon, I actually like everything but Volcano by them. Newest album is great.
Grave, Into the Grave
Bethlehem, first 3 releases
Immortal, Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
Master's Hammer, Ritual and The Mass demo
Bathory, Blood Fire Death and before
Venom, Welcome to Hell and Black Metal
Necromantia, Crossing the Fiery Path and the Varathron split
Order From Chaos, everything
Ved Buens Ende, everything (everyone should check them out)
Burzum, don't have to explain, pretty big now.
Tormentor, Seventh Day of Doom and Anno Domini
Autopsy, Mental Funeral
Darkthrone, Panzerfaust and below. Listen to goatlord until you get it :)

I have hundreds of bands I could list. PM me if you want a ton of other quality stuff I left out.

I thought P.D's "Prowler in the yard" was one of the best things ever, the newer stuff don't really do it for me. I'd just go back to the early Carcass albums instead. Sergio Georgini, yer list is pretty freakin' right on, especially the Blasphemy, Beherit, and Death SS. Also check out Nun Slaughter, and (as everyone from the sendspace column knows) DESTROYER 666!

that Electroquarterstaff album that came out last year was incredible. it kinda sounds like 'The Rite of Spring' w/ blastbeats.

a few friends of mine just put out a pretty promising ep of non-ironic Priest style metal/rock with female vocals. check 'em out. "Left Hand Path" is my favorite.

hmm.. not too much else i'm into at the moment.

Municipal Waste throw down some outstanding, old-school thrash.

I'd been meaning to check out these guys since I saw a kid wearing one of their shirts a couple of weeks ago. I'm listening to 'The Art Of Partying' just now; it's like a time tunnel directly back to 1992!

Thanks for the 'Wolves In The Throne Room' recommendation also, Ty. I've been listening to that album a lot. It's excellent!

Cheers! Glad you like it. Those guys really crush.

Check out Ufomammut. Less straight-up metal, more ambient and creepy. Lots of slow builds and soundscapes, but they can still hold your attention.

Listening to Blessing The Hogs right now. Great Bay Area death/grind band. Gotta love songs like "Let's Play Doctor...Kevorkian" and "Pretard".

Firstly, Napalm Death don't begin as metal. Grind in it's early stages was far more like the UK equivalent of hardcore. By the time Napalm have became a metal act, they also stank and the key members had left. Also not metal: SunnO))).They're a fine band but they ain't metal. Also, Immortal can't help it if they look like wrestlers.

lots of good and bad acts have been mentioned above, so I'll throw in Ildjarn. One man act that has extremly rough recordings, which totally suit what he's trying to do. It's very simple music played with a very total drive and sounds impossibly angry. It's punk and noise and metal all in one hit. if you find this to your taste, give Akitsa and Bone Awl a try as well.

Bias: Tasmanian black metal act Striborg. This guy has been at it for years and has a unique, filthy sound. He has had a lot of exposure just recently, and you can find his stuff being distro'd by Southern Lord. Give it a try but it's very rough and noisy stuff.

Skepticism are a very slow act that have a pretty special sound - almost like a hymn in a way.

Teeth of Lions Rule The Divine - named after and Earth song. One album with a 'doom metal superstars' line-up .The album has three songs, one of which is a Killdozer cover that really works

The Black Legions: french guys who were so into the whole black metal 'Kvlt' thing they never played live and released their stuff in really small editions. It's now much bootlegged and vastly over-rated in many ways, but there's some amazing weird music in there. Mutiilation is the starting point I guess.

I also greatly enjoy Darkthrone. The trilogy( A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under a Funeral Moon and Translvanian Hunger) they released is some of the finest metal I have ever heard, of any genre.

I'll add my support for Municipal Waste. I haven't heard the new one yet, but Hazardous Mutation kicks my ass whenever I listen to it. A modern-day DRI, more or less.

Pig Destroyer as well...not sure whether I prefer the heavy punk and thrash influence of Terrifyer or the sheer brutality of Phantom Limb. They're excellent if you get a chance to catch them live.

Old Slayer is, of course, classic. I'm also a big fan of Obituary's Cause Of Death and Carcass's material from Necroticism through Heartwork.

I saw High On Fire the other night...good stuff.

And British Steel is in the tape deck in my car.
