I just got an assistant eng. job at a studio that pays, but there was an intern working there before I took that job... I can sense an edge on him that he should have been given that job , and I should have started on the bottom as the intern.. we are both of the same skill level, I just was in the right place at the right time..
any ideas as to how I can keep this tension from killing the vibe in the control room!?

4I don't think this was a matter of right place right time type of situation. It seems like this guy just like your attitude better than the other guys. Congrats. Don't feel bad, trust me he would not have felt that way about you

7It's like jail, dude.
Just shank him next time he goes to take a piss and he's by himself.
You gotta show him what side the bread's buttered on.

8make friends with him, ask him if you have any questions, this will let him know you value his experience

9I think it speaks volumes to this guys character if the dude resents you because someone thinks you're better qualified.
A lot of assistants can take notes, make patches, or grab coffees. You might have been chosen because your personality fills the room better. That tension in the control room may not be you killing the vibe, but him.

10If you are the same skill level I would be a little miffed too. It may boil down to a personality issue though. I would hire someone with less skill and a better personality before the opposite. Just be his friend. take him out for beers after your first day. Get him a hooker. Something like that.
